The Movie

It's impossible to ignore the success story of one of music's most famous groups, The Beatles. From the early 60's onward, the band has been a pop culture landmark of sorts. Today, the music of The Beatles is just as legendary as ever, with compilation CDs still topping the charts! They've sold millions of records, and won the hearts of fans across the globe. Even you're not the biggest fan, it's hard to deny their lasting influence on the music industry.

For the last few decades, they've been everywhere, and even made a few trips to the big screen. Their second effort was titled Help!, and is quite the odd tale. The basic premise: upon receiving a gift from a fan, Ringo discovers that this gift is actually from an evil cult who wants to use him as a human sacrifice! What follows next is a chase around the world, complete with song breaks and a generous dose of slapstick comedy. It's just as strange as it sounds, and maybe even more so! Since its original release in 1965, Help! has a been a perennial favorite of fans, sitting alongside other films as A Hard Day's Night and Yellow Submarine.

Needless to say, it's a bit far-fetched and self-indulgent (heck, most of their films are), but it's all good fun in retrospective. Help! wasn't really made as a major artistic statement…it's more like a celebration of The Beatles' massive success. While this is not necessarily their strongest effort, Help! really aims to please. In fact, you don't even have to be a fan to really appreciate The Beatles' talent, but it sure helps.

Featured Songs:
1. Help!
2. You're Going To Lose That Girl
3. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
4. Ticket To Ride
5. I Need You
6. The Night Before
7. Another Girl

Surprisingly hard to find on DVD thus far, our friends at HKFlix.com have really come to the rescue! Throughout February 8, this new release can be had for the exceptionally low price of $14.95, which makes this DVD quite a bargain. While not the full-blown Special Edition many fans may have been hoping for, this all-region import features an excellent presentation of the film. At this price, you really can't go wrong! Let's see what's included:

Quality Control Department

Video:

For a nearly 40 year-old film, Help! looks great! The included trailer is worn and dirty, but the main feature is a great improvement. Colors are on the muted side, but are still handled very well. There's a modest amount of grain present on this 1.33:1 image, but it's nothing to be worried about. Blacks are also solid, and this was a very clean transfer. Overall, Help! is blessed with a nice visual presentation that really surprised me. Fans won't be disappointed in the least!

Audio:

The audio was restored nicely, and had a surprising amount of punch. It's been a few years since I last sat down with this film, and I was pleasantly surprised with the effort put forth in the audio department. Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, most of the dialogue was a little thin, but the music cues sounded excellent and full of life. Most Yankees will want to also check this out with the optional English subtitles…although they're a bit sluggish, it helps to make out some of the thick British accents. Overall, Help! sounds better than ever…that's a big plus for this DVD.

Menu design and presentation:

The menus are bit on the gaudy side, but still do the job nicely. Static backgrounds are combined with music clips to provide an appropriate Beatles atmosphere. There's 17 chapters for the movie itself, and also a nice "music selection" menu that takes you directly to any of the film's 7 music breaks. The outer packaging is a little nondescript (it doesn't really even mention the film's name!), but this is an online-exclusive purchase that won't really have to stand out on a store shelf. Also, I noticed that the reverse side of the cover art showcases a few photos (which are hidden by the black case). If you're a packaging geek like me, you might even want to put this in a clear keepcase instead.

Extras:

This was the main area that could have really been improved upon. There weren't any notable extras to speak of, other than the previously-mentioned Trailer for the film. There are also some band member Biographies and a Film Synopsis (production notes), but these are displayed in Chinese only. A mild disappointment, but the film's restoration is good enough to lighten the blow.

Should anything else have been included?

Beatles fans are typically of the rabid variety, so any extra stuff would have been most welcome. There were undoubtedly a few deleted scenes or at least a blooper reel…the Fab Four were known for cutting up in front of the camera. Still, I'm wondering just how much was available to pick and choose from, but maybe we'll see more in a future release. Either way, it would have been nice to provide the given extras with an English translation.

Final Thoughts

For Beatles fans, this one's a no-brainer. If you're even remotely interested, take advantage of this limited time offer from HKflix.com to get Help! for only $14.95 (click the 'Buy' button above). This DVD could have been a little more substantial in the extras department, but it's hard to complain at this price. It's no Beatles Anthology, but this is at least a very good effort in the audio/video department. Help! is a fun, light-hearted trip back in time that featured the most popular band of the 20th century…this is no Glitter, that's for sure. Needless to say, this disc is easily Recommended for Beatles fans (and future fans) alike.
