THE MOVIE

Okay, I have a confession to make. Back in the 80's and early 90's (before I moved out of my parents' basement and got a real job) I was a huge fan of ABC's General Hospital. Looking at the show today, one might ask what the heck I was thinking – but trust me folks, back "in the day" General Hospital had it all: gorgeous women, bad guys who wanted to blow up (or freeze!) the world, dashing spies, lots of action and some really great storytelling.

So while soap opera weddings were never my favorite part of the show, I just had to pick up Daytime's Greatest Weddings in the hope of seeing some of my favorite television actors back before ABC cleaned house and hired the current lackluster cast that currently inhabits the show (with the exception of the great Anthony Geary, of course).

But this DVD doesn't only cover General Hospital, it also covers weddings on the shows All My Children and One Live To Live, two soaps that I am much less familiar with. The DVD is broken up into four sections – one for each of the three shows listed above, plus a fourth section hosted by All My Children's Rebecca Budig that covers recent weddings on all three programs. Why cover recent ones, you ask? Well because the other three programs aren't new! They are all about 10 years old and were originally released separately on videotape (each runs about 45 minutes).

Not knowing the characters of All My Children and One Live To Live that well (although each is given an introduction), I wasn't nearly as interested in this part of the DVD – although granted, fans of those shows will probably love the stuff presented here. Covered are some of Erica Kane's (Susan Lucci) many loves – perhaps the most married woman in the history of daytime TV. The One Live To Live section covers such couples as Viki and Clint Buchanan.

As for General Hospital, I guess the big story for me wasn't what was included – but the cool weddings that were left out. This section, naturally, has the wedding between Luke and Laura – which I believe is still the most-watched daytime event in television history. Missing, however, is the 1991 marriage of Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), which was a huge event for fans at the time it took place. Other weddings include those between Frisco and Felecia, Steve and Audrey, and perhaps the funniest wedding ever filmed for daytime: the marriage of Sean & Tiffany.

THE DVD

Video:
The video is presented in the full-frame format and is only average for a DVD release. As most soap viewers know, these shows are shot on video, and since some of this footage is old, the quality varies from scene to scene.

Audio:
The audio is equally average – presented in 2.0 Dolby. Once again, depending on the age of the footage you are watching, there may be some slight "hissing" or other noticeable audio problems. But this has everything to do with the footage being used, so some scenes sound better than others.

Extras:
The only extra here is the already-mentioned Backstage With The Stars featurette hosted by Rebecca Budig and covering the more recent weddings of the three soaps. This extra runs just under 30-minutes in length, and I didn't find it to be quite as entertaining as the other portions of the DVD…which may say something about the quality of today's soaps compared to 10 years ago (i.e. production values may have gone up, but storytelling has gone down…way down!).

THE BOTTOM LINE

Being a huge fan of only one of the three shows, this DVD didn't provide quite enough material to warrant a purchase, although it works just fine as a one-viewing rental. I suppose if you're a big fan of two or more of these shows, you might want to add this to your collection.
