Synopsis: The Hidden is a classic 80's Sci-Fi flick that's still pretty cool in 2000. Essentially, aliens have traveled to the Earth while fleeing from a sort of intergalactic police force. Once here, they steal Ferrari's & have a penchant for loud rock/progressive music. That's not the best part though. The alien's true form is something of a slimy black worm/beetle like creature that enters the bodies of its host through the mouth. Anyway, these aliens go from host to host in an attempt to gain control of Earth & bring more of their kind here in some sort of invasion force. Kyle Mac Laughlin is an alien policeman searching for the creature that killed his partner. The only problem is, the alien chooses another host right before Mac Laughlin can catch him. Finally, the stage is set for their final confrontation & the winner will decide the next step in our planet's existence.

Video: The video is surprisingly beautiful given the film's age. I did not notice any markings of any kind. I was actually astonished at how well preserved the print must have been to produce a transfer of this type! While not anamorphic, the disc as presented is simply beautiful.

Audio: The audio portion of the presentation boasts a 5.1 platform as well as a Director's commentary that's loaded with information regarding the film's genesis & subsequent production. It's definitely one of the discs nicer features. Jack Sholder & Tim Hunter are not the most energetic commentators but they do get the film's point across rather well. There is a pretty decent amount of surround presence & the sub woofer is used quite nicely in conveying the effect & feels needed to put the story across.

Extras: New Line cinema has made a name for itself in producing some of the most jam-packed discs on the market. Sadly, The Hidden is not one of their platinum edition discs. The extras you'll find on the disc are: The trailer, Cast & Crew Bios & Special Effects production footage that can be viewed with or without the director's commentary. The effects footage was pretty neat in that it nicely demonstrated the way in which the effects at the very end of the movie were done. The commentary also lent more info as it went into considerable detail in explaining the setup & execution of very key scenes that shaped the end of the feature.

Overall: The Hidden was a movie I remember seeing when I was in High School back in the 80's. Then it was awesome. Not it's retrospectively cool. It's a nicely done Sci-Fi thriller that suffers from some rather wooden acting from both Michael Nouri & Kyle Mac Laughlin but that just adds to the campy coolness of the film!
