While the term has not really taken off in the United States as much as it has globally, services like Kickstarter and especially Kiva have given the concept more focus on the global stage. Over time, the borrower pays back the loan and the Kiva lender is paid back - although without interest, probably due to regulations. Meanwhile, cable continues to make strides with shows like "Breaking Bad", "Game of Thrones" and even "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (which isn't as good as it once was, but still manages to be funnier than most network offerings.)

Much like "Sunny", "Life and Times of Tim" was initially thought to be heading to a network (Fox), but wound up on cable, finding a home at HBO. The animated series does a fine job walking the line between the real and surreal as it follows Tim, a mild-mannered everyguy who worked for a faceless, generic mega-corporation in New York Cit...Read the entire review

Blue" is an internet series that is filmed using the "Halo" video games (and as the sequels of the original game have improved graphically, so has "Red Vs. Blue".) While the series has improved technically over the seasons (thanks to technical improvements in the sequels and the use of additional effects), the writing was outstanding from the outset and has improved further in the years since, as the series has added richer plots and surprisingly effective moments of drama.

Of course, there's also the occasional action sequence, although the humor of much of the series (especially the original run of 100 episodes) is that two separate groups supposed to be fighting each other rarely fight and when they do, they do so quite unsuccessfully. The voice acting is also top-notch, giving the characters personalities strong enough to more than overcome the fact that the ...Read the entire review

The show follows the Robertson family, who started a business over 20 years ago when Phil Robertson started making duck calls out of Louisiana cedar trees. Years later, the duck call business has since exploded, and turned the family into millionaires.

Yet ... they all still dress like a backwoods ZZ Top. Even I could come up with a new idea: take Chumlee when "Pawn" isn't filming, and have him drive across the country, visiting with different pawn shops large and small, watching transactions, chatting up customers and seeing some of the shop's coolest items. A comedy based on two people who met at overeaters anonymous certainly had the potential to veer in the wrong direction, but thanks to the charming, comedic performances (especially McCarthy) and entertaining storylines "Mike and Molly" manages to focus less on where they met, and more on where they go from there.

Mike (Billy Gardell), a police officer, and Molly (Melissa McCarthy), a school teacher do take some time in season one getting their relationship going, but once they do it's enjoyable to watch as their bond grows deeper, depicting a wonderful on-screen couple that feels both genuine and likeable. Not since Paul and Jamie Buchman ("Mad About You") have I invested in the idea that these two people could actually be a real couple, in the real world. McCarthy and Gardell work wonderfully off one another, and the writers focus occasionally on t...Read the entire review

"10 Things You Didn't Know About" is also on History 2 (which is likely a channel that many don't know about), but it's a start in the attempt to offer a little more straightforward education versus edutainment.

Slightly jazzed-up in order to catch the audience's attention versus dry historical factoids, the series follows historian David Eisenbach as he narrates a series of historical factoids (although historical factoids presented with non-PBS things like zippy wipes and sound effects), re-enactments and man on the street interviews (where people on the street are surprised in the first episode to find out that Benjamin ...Read the entire review

Pretty good show with a bad title that sounds like an '80's cop drama? The whole thing sounds a little like a "Family Guy" riff (they're lawyers - and they don't play by the rules!) - and the series fills a category where there's been such a dry spell: legal dramas.

All kidding aside, the series is a snappy legal drama that leans heavily towards the lighter side. The show stars Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Jared Franklin and Peter Bash, two young lawyers and best friends who are recruited by a giant law firm after they score a win against them in a very high-profile case.

They are recruited by the giant firm of Infield-Davis and senior partner, Stanton Infield (a terrific Malcolm McDowell), who sees something he's fond of in the approach of the two lawyers, who he's been following for some time. "Pawn Stars" is a lot of fun, but - and nothing against the South - do we really need "Cajun Pawn Stars", as well as seemingly several loud "Pawn" rip-offs from generally loud TruTV (whose reality shows, we are reminded on the channel's website, are not reality, but "actuality." While "Drop Dead Diva" does have its fair share of dramatic moments, the overall feel of the series is light and playful. With engaging characters that are multidimensional and never become stereotypes, "Drop Dead Diva" not only defines the main character's inner beauty, but also the people around her. And while I'm all for the message behind the series, I'm also appreciative that the series is well written and presents its take on beauty in an intelligent and even playful manner.

Deb's (Brooke D'Orsay) life changed forever when she got into a car accident on the way to an audition. The series follows real-life bounty hunter "Dog" Chapman who, with the help of his family (wife Beth; Dog's brother, Tim; Dog's son, Leland; Dog's daughter, Lyssa and Dog's nephew, Justin), tracks down criminals on the Hawaiian islands and occasionally elsewhere.

The series jumps between Dog's home life and professional life as Dog takes care of his family both at home and while chasing down the bad guys. Given that it's a profession that one hears so little about (I'm guessing intentionally, as the hunters probably don't want every trick of the trade to get out), it's interesting to see the way that Chapman and his crew operate (although I'm unsure if...Read the entire review

All of the shows are incredibly intense and compelling, but there are certainly quite a few edge-of-your-seat moments in "Ice Road Truckers". The series, which airs on the History Channel, focuses on a band of truck drivers who drive massive rigs across frozen wasteland to haul vital supplies off to remote areas. Fox has apparently even gotten the rights from the History Channel to do a feature film based upon the series.

"IRT" is, however, not "Ice Road Truckers". Well, not exactly. Apparently one of the more recent efforts of cable channel Nickelodeon, "Thornberrys" features the family of the title - Father is the host of a nature show, while mom operates the camera. Young Eliza (voiced by Lacey Chabert) once saved a tribal chief from a warthog, so she has been given the gift of being able to communicate with animals. Her sister is a regular teenager, almost always embarassed by the actions of her younger sibling.

The series is another take on the "Dr Dolittle" theme, but it offers reasonably good writing, enjoyable stories and a solid set of voice talent. While the series wasn't part of the last of what I'd call the "end of an era" in kids' programming (which ended in the early '90's, with treasures like "Duck Tales"), but a...Read the entire review
