Kevin Brownlow's restoration of this 1921 French adaptation of a Zola novel is noted for its advanced technique and natural atmosphere atypical of silent films and Howard Hawks' screwball military comedy I Was a Male War Bride - a somewhat dated but remains a favorite of Hawks fans.
