DVD Savant: Ikiru, A Brief Vacation, La Terre
This week the DVD Savant takes a look at Kurosawa's most universally acclaimed classic Ikiru: Criterion Edition with two excellent Japanese documentaries on the director and his career, Vittorio De Sica's late-career gem A Brief Vacation a softened revisit of his neorealist roots, Blackmail Is My Life- Cult director Kinji Fukasaku gives us a happy pack of blackmailing punks, who rob criminals and corrupt bigshots, but learn too late the risks of their business. La Terre. Kevin Brownlow's restoration of this 1921 French adaptation of a Zola novel is noted for its advanced technique and natural atmosphere atypical of silent films and Howard Hawks' screwball military comedy I Was a Male War Bride - a somewhat dated but remains a favorite of Hawks fans. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
