Silent DVD: Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film
Before Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack made King Kong, they made some very popular travel films. This week Silent DVD has a look at their first two films: Grass, the story of a migrant tribe in Persia, and Chang, a look at the lives of the natives of Siam. Both films are a glimpse into the past, showing a life style that no longer exists. We also have an in depth look at one of the most ambitious collections to ever be released on DVD: Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film 1893 - 1941. This massive seven disc set features 155 unique and experimental films and does a wonderful job of tracing the origins of avant garde cinema. A must see for fans of early cinema. Be sure to check out our recent columns on The White Hell of Pitz Palu, Triumph of the Will, Kino's Slapstick Symposium Too, the SlapHappy series, and the 2005 San Francisco Silent Film Festival.
