DVD Savant: King Kong Bonanza
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: King Kong Two-Disc Special Edition -
Warners' terrific disc has a gotta-see extra from Peter Jackson's WETA effects group among almost 3.5 hours of solid extras; The Son of Kong - this immediate sequel to King Kong is like the hangover after a big party; Mighty Joe Young -
Willis O'Brien's technical marvel introduced Ray Harryhausen's animation artistry to the film in an underrated kid's story of a giant pet ape who becomes a great hero; State Fair - This double disc 60th Anniversary set includes two versions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's direct-to-Hollywood romantic musical; A Man Called Magnum - Grindhouse action fluff, Italian style; The Tales of Hoffmann - Criterion gives us Powell& Pressburger's opera epic, an extended exercise using their The Red Shoes stylistics; Punishment Park - New Yorker gives Peter Watkins' abrasively political fantasy an official domestic U.S. release. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
