DVD Savant: City Lights, The Hitch-Hiker, and Lion of the Desert
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: City Lights - Charlie Chaplin's all-round best film balances his slapstick genius with bittersweet sentiments that transcend silent-movie conventions; it's one of the most compellingly human movies ever; The Hitch-Hiker - Based on a true story, this harrowing, groundbreaking noir suspenser has Frank Lovejoy and Edmond O'Brien taken for a one-way ride by William Talman's psychotic serial killer; and Lion of the Desert -Moustapha Akkad's epic of Libyan resistance to conquest by Italian Fascists is a slow but handsome, accurate telling of the strategic battles between an ambitious general and the Libyan rebel Omar Mukhtar mounted on a lavish scale. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
