Recent Notable Releases: Tomb Raider, El Sur, and Ninja III: The Domination
Some pretty cool discs have made their way to store shelves over the past couple of weeks. Check out these new titles:
Tomb Raider (4K UHD) - a perfectly serviceable film that continually gets better as the runtime progresses… the script is thin, but the Lara Croft character excels due to Alicia Vikander's wonderful performance; El Sur: Criterion Collection - a pleasant surprise for those unfamiliar with Spanish director Victor Erice's small body of work: filled with memorable visuals and a glimpse of the fractured, vaguely nostalgic relationship between a father and daughter through the years, there's a lot to appreciate; and Ninja III: The Domination (Collector's Edition) - there's so-bad-it's-good, and then there's Ninja III: The Domination. Tapping into America's long-unsated hunger for supernaturally Jazzercised martial arts action, this film is entrancingly bizarre and '80s action schlock of the highest order.
