Muriel, ou Le temps d'un retour Alain Resnais approaches his familiar theme of time displacement and the uncertain future without the trappings of art film symbolism, science fiction or overwhelming war angst, although a war is still the main factor. Delphine Seyrig and company can't deal with the past, misrepresent themselves to others and gum up their lives. One of the best of the less-celebrated French masterpieces.
