Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

Equinox  Criterion
The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight  Warner and
A Fine Madness  Warner

Forgive me, but it's just one of those nights where I'm lucky to get the reviews out at all ... but I can say that the Warner Film Noir 3 Box is on the way, along with (hopefully) good copies of two "original" 50s Mexican horror films. Thanks for reading!

Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

Clark Gable: The Signature Collection:
Dancing Lady, China Seas, Wife vs. Secretary, Boom Town, Mogambo and San Francisco
 Warners
  and
Hercules & Mole Men vs. the Son of Hercules  Retromedia

Hello ... I've been asked by several readers to mention that the Canadian version of the John Ford-John Wayne Box Set is missing the Stagecoach disc - apparently the docu on that two disc set isn't licensed for Canada. Some online retailers claim that it's there, and then people get the set in the mail and it's a big disappointment.

Also, a post on the Mobius Home Video Forum has this fairly amazing link to what was once a lost film, the 1910 Edison Frankenstein. Thanks to Gary Teetzel for pointing this one out. -- See you on Tuesday! Glenn Erickson

Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

Dazed and Confused  Criterion
Hamsun  First Run Features
Rice People  Facets / Blaq Out and
Agent #1  Facets / Polart

Happy hot June .... Savant was just told that he has two desired Warners items on the way, the Grand Prix special edition and the Tough Guys Collection. Grand Prix should look and sound great; I remember it new but am not sure whether I saw it in 70mm ... probably not. In the "Tough Guys" set is City for Conquest, which is said to be a restoration of the original uncut version, not seen since ... a long time ago. The TV version we've seen has big ugly splices at the beginning and especially at the end, that break up the music and ruin the mood (it ends far too abruptly). Well, there are new scenes that go in both places. One of them apparently has more footage of Elia Kazan's acting role in the movie.

Thanks for reading! Glenn Erickson

The Goebbels Experiment  First Run Features
I Wake Up Screaming  Fox
Why We Fight  Sony and
The Valerio Zurlini Box Set:
Violent Summer & Girl With a Suitcase
 NoShame

Savant trembled while reading this A.V. Club article, The 15 People You Meet Listening To DVD Audio Commentaries by Noel Murray, Keith Phipps, Nathan Rabin, Tasha Robinson. Praise heaven I wasn't mentioned by name. I'd have to say that I might qualify in the gray areas of numbers 1, 2 and 13 -- but of course would plead innocent!

I also received a letter today from Ousama Rawi, the Director of Cinematography of Zulu Dawn with a correction to my review. I've amended the review, here. Thanks! Glenn Erickson

House of Strangers  Fox
The Quiet Earth  Anchor Bay
Duma  Warner DVD and

Nothing prepared to report tonight ... except the four reviews. Might update in a day or so! Thanks for reading -- Glenn Erickson

Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

Dumbo  Disney DVD
Beyond the Law & The Grand Duel
and Pistoleros
 Wild East
By Lee Broughton

and
Loving Couples  New Yorker / Project X

Along with his reviews today, Lee Broughton offers this note about a BBC screening the other night: Apparently there's more evidence that the Master of Suspense was a naughty boy.

"The BBC have been screening some interesting stuff about early British cinema this last week. There was a fairly decent docu called Shepperton Babylon that showed how a lot of continental stars had their voices dubbed when talkies came along by simply having an English actor standed off camera speaking their lines while they silently mouthed them. Some of this kind of dubbing was really effective. Also a bit about Alfred Hitchcock included in the same show. I'd read in passing that the guy was a bit of a sleaze but they actually had footage of him screen-testing an actress and the test involved him repeatedly trying to lift her skirt when she clearly didn't want him to. Other footage had him clearly taking delight in verbally tormenting and confusing another actress. Pretty disturbing stuff. Some great clips shown from forgotten Brit films from the 30s and 40s that are clearly well off the radar of most of the populace these days (Brit TV doesn't like screening black and white movies much any more). Hope some of these make it to DVD some day."

Thanks Lee.

Gary Teetzel passes on the good news that Warners has acquired all of the old Max Fleischer Popeye and Superman cartoons, and we'll start seeing them soon. It's great news because they'll be restored; I've seen so many bad copies of the terrific Superman cartoons that I'd almost given up on them.

I just saw the new Criterion disc of Equinox and really enjoyed it. My review won't be up until closer to street date, but if you're anxious DVD Talk already has an Equinox review up by Bill Gibron that you might like! Thanks for reading ... Glenn Erickson

June 05, 2006

Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre  Fox
Track of the Cat  Paramount
The Last Wagon  Fox and
Fists in the Pocket  Criterion

Just a quick note tonight: First, Gary Teetzel has forwarded this link to a trailer for a new Japanese movie, "NIPPON CHINBOTSU", a remake of the 1975 semi-classic The Submersion of Japan. It's being given a monster send-off in Tokyo but is completely off the radar here. -- Glenn Erickson

June 02, 2006

Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

The John Wayne / John Ford Collection
Stagecoach, The Long Voyage Home, They Were Expendable, Fort Apache, 3 Godfathers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers & The Wings of Eagles
 Warner DVD
and
Tora! Tora! Tora!  Fox

Wow, the list above may seem short, but it represents six new reviews and two old ones ... and that should take care of the box sets for a while -- I've just done four in two weeks. Now back to fun stuff like The St. Valentine's Day Massacre!

Quick news ... Mark your calendar: On September 19 Universal will release The Boris Karloff Collection with NIGHT KEY, TOWER OF LONDON, THE CLIMAX, THE BLACK CASTLE and THE STRANGE DOOR, and The Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Complete Collection. We're also hearing rumors of a Columbia Karloff collection, which we hope will have THE BLACK ROOM; I personally wish Columbia would favor us with a DVD of the Peter Lorre chiller THE FACE BEHIND THE MASK. -- Glenn E.
