Movie:
Combining the elements of Middle Eastern, Persian, Oriental, Irish folk, Gregorian, ancient music and goth Dead Can Dance was one of the better musical outfits of the 1980's and 90's. Anyone who saw them in concert was witness to a real – some would say religious – experience. Now a DVD of a concert they gave in 1993 is available from Warner Music Group and it sounds terrific.

The bands main two singer songwriters were Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. Lisa brings an ethereal spiritual element with her knock-out voice, which sails like the wind over everyone and Brendan adds the secular, narrative-driven yet mythical element that brings it all back to earth. The rest of the band backs them up with old and new instruments.

The concert featured on this DVD was held at the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica California; a theatre that was all but destroyed in the Northridge Earthquake of 1994.

Dead Can Dance - Toward The Within has previously been available on CD and most likely if you are a fan you have it. This DVD was also included in a 3 disc and 1 DVD box set from Rhino. Now it is available by itself. It is pretty much the same track for track as the CD – except of course you see the band perform. Notable is to watch Lisa Gerrard up close when she sings. It makes you realize the amazing energy she puts into her powerful vocals.

The film intersperses the concert with interviews of both Lisa and Brendan (separately) who descant about their music from practical and philosophical positions.

Video:
The DVD is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and looks okay. The image is soft and the colors are not too sharp but since the video was shot in low light there isn't much missing. The video quality is not as good as we see today but it is not bad.

Audio:
The audio is in Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds great. Each song has excellent range across the audio spectrum. And since they can play it loud and soft this is good. Turn this one up.

Extras:
There are five music videos which include The Carnival Is Over, The Host of Seraphim, Yulunga (spirit dance), Frontier and The Protagonist. Two are from the film Baraka and the rest are music videos all of good quality and presented full frame. There is also a discography of each album and song.

Final Thoughts:
I'm guessing most fans already bought the previous box set from Rhino but if not then this is the ticket. It's a very good concert DVD that sounds fabulous. Recommended for fans and especially for people who are new to their work.
