The Show:

After the success of Burn Up and Burn Up W, the women from Team Warrior are back in action with a new 13 part series:  Burn Up Excess.  In this series the girls solve more crimes while jiggling their massive breasts as much as possible.

When the regular police department can't handle a job, they hire Team Warrior: a top-secret group of elite (and buxom) police officers.  Included in this squad are inventor extraordinaire Nanvel, computer hacker Lilica, expert marksman and gun nut Maya, token male Yuji, and the hyper Rio who is always in need of more cash.  The quiet and mysterious Maki leads the band.  Whether it's taking out terrorists who have captured Neo-Tokyo Tower, guarding a pop star, or finding out who is stealing items from their offices, no job is too big, or too small, for these fighting gals (oh yea, and Yuji.)

This comedy-action series consists of mainly single story episodes, but there is a sub plot running through the series that ties the show together.   You can probably guess the format of the show just from the description.  Each episode has the team called up for some mission, with each member using her talents to get the job done.  Rio is the main character and also comic relief.  She is always in debt from buying too many clothes, and is searching for a rich husband.  She is incompetent most of the time, but always comes through in the end.

I have to admit that fan-service doesn't do much for me.  I've never seen the point of getting aroused by a cartoon character jiggling her breasts or showing off her butt.  There's no nudity in this series mind you, just jiggles.  This series has so many locker room scenes and down the blouse shots that they even reused some of them to save money on animation.  When the plot is worked out to get the most fan-service in, you know the show is going to be a little weak.

Most of these episodes are pretty lame and formulistic, and the comedy falls flat.  I don't think I had a good laugh throughout the whole series, and that's really bad for a comedy series.  Rio trying to marry a rich client gets really dull after a while, and it was not even funny the first time through.  Maya's pouting over the fact that she can't shoot anything is equally trite.  And while the cross dressing villains were mildly amusing in one episode, I can't fathom why the creators thought that they could carry a second appearance.

One of the problems is that the cast members are not equal.  This is Rio's show, and she is featured in most episodes.  While the most other members will each get a show of their own in the series, they fall into the background the rest of the time.  If this had been a real team show, it might have been more interesting.

The animation to this show isn't very exciting either.  It looks like a budget job, with the movements looking a little stilted.  There is a lot of panning across still shots (especially panty clad buns) and they reuse the animation in some scenes.

While there were some interesting episodes, and some of the action was good, overall the series didn't do much for me.  It would have been better if they cut out a majority of the fan service and stuck to straight action.

The DVD:

This set contains the same four DVDs that were originally released individually; all packed into a "brick" style DVD case.

Audio:

This DVD presents the show in both the original Japanese and with English and Spanish dubs, all in stereo.  The English track was okay, nothing special, but nothing horribly wrong either, but the Japanese track was very good.  I thought the original voice actors did a great job.  I spot checked the Spanish track and didn't notice anything wrong with it.  As for the sound quality, it was about average.  The explosions and gunfire lacked punch, but the dialog was clean.  About what you would expect for a two-channel soundtrack of recent vintage.

Video:

This series was made in 1997, but the full frame image looks like it was much older.  Some of that has to do with the cheap animation, but the picture is also on the soft side.  The colors are not bright, with everything looking a little dull.  There are a few instances of print damage, with spots and the occasional scratch on the image.  I was hoping for better.

The Extras:

This disc includes a series of rough production sketches, a clean opening and closing, and a "Jiggle Counter."  If you enable this last item, it will count the number of times each girl bounces her boobs.  It was amusing at first, but grew old after a few episodes.

There are also trailers for Princess Nine, Nadia, A.D. Police, Robotech Masters, Plastic Little, and Soul Hunter.

Final Thoughts:

This series had potential, but the lame comedy and excessive fan-service just did it in.  Some of the action was pretty good, and the show is worth watching for the handful of episodes that are a little more serious in tone.  Rent It.
