Art and Music Volume 1
MCV Video has taken that idea, and given it a little twist. They have released a series of DVDs under the Art & Music title where they present images of fine art accompanied by classical music. This first disc in the set has several impressionist paintings set to the music of Rossini. Just playing the disc will automatically loop the 33 minute DVD so you don't have to restart it periodically, a definite improvement over the VHS variations on this theme where you had to rewind the tape every so often. With this DVD you can just pop it in and let it run.
This disc contains the following paintings and music:
"Regatta At Argenteuil" (labled as "Yacht Races at Argenteuil" on the menu) accompanied by Rossini's Sonata for Strings in G Major 1st Movement.
"Dancers in Blue" by Degas with Rossini's Sonata for Strings in G Major 2nd Movement.
Gauguin's "Women Bathing" while the third movement of Rossini's Sonata for Strings in G Major is playing.
The three movements of Rossini's Sonata for Strings in B flat Major follow next. While this is playing, "Mont Sainte-Victoire" by Cezanne, "A Rainy Street" and "Sculls on Yerres, both by Caillebotte are shown on the monitor.
From the index you can select an individual painting and view just that. Wisely they do not offer the ability to have just one image loop over and over since that would risk burn in on some monitors.
The DVD
Audio:
The classical music track that accompanies these paintings is very good. The violins are clear and clean, and the highs are reproduced very well. The group that plays the music sounds very talented to my untrained ear, and I enjoyed their performance.
Video:
The picture quality is very good. With just still images being shown, there are not any digital compression artifacts. The colors look accurate, and the images faithfully reproduce the paintings.
Extras:
There are no extras on this DVD.
Final Thoughts:
This is a well put together DVD, with good quality and is actually nicer than I thought it would be. The only problem I have is that I can't really see myself popping this into the player too often. It might be nice to play at a party or dinner, or if you are the type of person who likes to have the TV on all day just for some background noise, this DVD would be ideal. For those applications, this DVD is definitely recommended.
