The Movie:

"Committed" is an oddball movie that works only due to the film's star - it's really a compliment to how charming (and beautiful) an actress Heather Graham is that she really takes this film and runs with it, not quite taking it all the way - but certainly pulling it beyond the material. Graham plays Joline, who does booking at a New York nightclub and is almost weirdly obsessed with keeping her marriage to Carl(Luke Wilson), working. She even has her wedding ring tattooed to her finger.

So, when Carl believes that things aren't quite working out for the best, which leads Joline on a journey out West to get him back. Strangely, she chooses to give him his space and simply follow him as he lives in El Paso. She makes friends with the locals, which include Neil(Goran Visnjic), who instantly likes Joline; Carmen(Patricia Velasquez), who becomes Joline's friend and others.

"Committed" is one of those films where I smiled a few times but never really fully laughed at any of the humor. Joline is an odd and not always likable character, but played by the warm and sweet Graham, we choose to follow her along on her weird journey anyways. Some of the supporting characters are not terribly well written, nor do they get much screen-time. This is one of those films where it almost equals itself out - never quite successful, it just goes along being merely "okay". A weird little movie, but one that has moments.

The DVD

VIDEO: Occasionally, Miramax really goes all out to create a great video presentation. "Committed", for the most part, is one of those instances. Sharpness and detail are both excellent, and Tom Krueger's cinematography makes the best of the New York and Texas locations.

The only flaw that I noticed was a tiny hint of pixelation once or twice. Other than that, there's no shimmering, and the print used is in perfect condition, with no marks, scratches or any other flaws.

Colors are often very pleasing, such as the bright clothes worn in the New York scenes, or the deep blue sky in the scenes in Texas. Colors are solid, bold and nicely saturated. Aside from a few little, tiny flaws, this is a great looking picture.

SOUND: The film's Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is pretty much a music and dialogue-driven effort. Although the score doesn't make much of an impression, it comes through clearly and sounds fine throughout the picture. Surround use is pretty limited during the movie, as one would probably expect from a film like this one. Dialogue is clear and natural, always easily understood.

MENUS:: Menus are non-animated, with very basic images serving as backgrounds.

EXTRAS: As with most Miramax titles, they either give us all or nothing. Or, as we see here, next to nothing - we only get the trailer.

Final Thoughts: "Committed" may be worth a rental for fans of Heather Graham. Also, if Disney/Miramax is going to keep the $32.99 retail price for some titles like this one, they certainly need to add something besides the trailer in the extras department.
