Review:
Movie:
The Killer, one of John Woo's best Hong Kong films, is finally available again on DVD, this time from Fox Lorber. The Killer stars Chow Yun-Fat (Jeffrey), Danny Lee (Li), Sarah Yeh (Jennie), and Chu Kong (Sydney).

Jeffrey is a contract killer who accepts his assignments through Sydney. On one such assignment, he accidentally blinds a lounge singer when he shoots someone from in front of her. Feeling rightly responsible, he watches over her from a distance to ensure her safety. Six months later, he saves her from a mugging and from then on, he takes a more active role in her life, often stopping by to visit. Determined to restore her sight, he takes one last contract to get the money needed for a cornea operation overseas. However, things start to go wrong when Inspector Li and the police spot him after he kills his target. He then finds himself in the middle of both the police, who want him captured, and Johnny Weng's hitmen, who double-crossed him and want him dead. Jeffrey must then stay one step ahead of the police while he tries to get the money to save Jennie's sight.

The Killer is an awesome movie. More than just an over the top action movie, John Woo has also packed in a great story involving the themes of friendship and honor. Easily one of his best movies, the Killer does not disappoint on any level.

Picture:
Killer is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, which is not enhanced for widescreen TVs. There are quite a few instances of defects in the print, including marks, specks, and scratches. But having said that, the Killer looks a lot better than the last time I saw it, which was on VHS. The black level is pretty good throughout most of the film. Colors are fairly vibrant and flesh tones are accurate. The picture does show a bit of fading, though not too often.

Sound:
Killer is presented in Dolby 1.0 Mono in both Cantonese and English. While the mono tracks are serviceable, I can only imagine how it would sound in a fully remastered 5.1 track. The dialogue is, for the most part, crisp and clean, with a few instances were the sound drops down considerably. I couldn't detect any defects, like hissing, in the tracks either.

Extras:
For extras, the Killer includes some pretty neat motion menus, trailers for the Killer and Hard Boiled, subtitles in English, production notes, John Woo's biography, filmographies for Chow Yun-Fat, Danny Lee, Sally Yeh, and John Woo, and a new audio commentary track with John Woo. The commentary with Woo was pretty interesting and entertaining; he talks at length about his reasons and influences.

Summary:
Fans of action movies, John Woo, or Chow Yun-Fat should definitely check out the Killer. Highly Recommended.
