Review:
Movie:
Snow Day, a Nickelodeon film, stars Chevy Chase (Tom Brandston), Chris Elliot (Snowplowman), Mark Webber (Hal Brandston), Zena Grey (Natalie Brandston), Jean Smart (Laura Brandston), Schuyler Fisk (Lane), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Claire) and Pam Grier (Tina), and is directed by Chris Koch.

There is nothing that young Natalie wishes more for than a snowstorm, and due to a freakishly warm winter, it would take a miracle for it to snow. Her brother, Hal, is concerned with other things, however, as he is hopelessly obsessed with Claire. Her mother, Laura, is a workaholic who can't seem to find the time to spend with her family; only her father, Tom, a struggling meteorologist, understands how bad she wants it to snow. And she gets her wish soon after: due to a weather change, the town is covered in snow the next morning. "Anything can happen on a snow day," as she often repeats during the course of the film, and on this one, it does. It changes the Brandston family forever, as each family member uses the snow day in a different way. For Tom, it's a chance to earn respect and prove himself as a meteorologist; for Laura, it's a chance to leave behind the hustle and bustle and discover what is really important; for Hal, it's a chance to discover true love; and for Natalie, it's a chance to stop the Snowplowman from ruining the possibility of a second snow day.

I really enjoyed Snow Day; it was a fun and lighthearted movie that will certainly appeal to kids as well as some adults. Of course, there are some pretty outrageous things that happen: action figures talk and move in one scene and in another part, there's a snow hut complete with power and an escape slide. Still, it is entertaining and has quite a few good laughs to boot.

Picture:
Snow Day is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and it is a terrific transfer with no problems that I could detect. Colors are vibrant throughout the film and flesh tones are accurate.

Sound:
Snow Day is presented in both an English Dolby Digital Surround 5.1 track and a French Dolby Surround 2.0 track. I didn't expect much in the way of surrounds, but I was pleasantly surprised: The 5.1 track makes great use of the surround speakers with terrific results. The movie also features a pretty cool soundtrack as well. Dialogue throughout the film is crisp and clean with no distortion.

Extras:
Snow Day has a few extras packed on the disc as well. First up are about ten minutes of cast and crew interviews in a featurette titled "Chillin' with the Cast of Snow Day." It features a few short interview clips with practically every cast member with a speaking part, as well as the director, interspersed with clips from the movie. There are also about three "Nicksclusives," which appear to be promotional spots for the movie. Next is a twelve-minute featurette titled "Snow Day Scoop," which has more interviews with the director, cast, and crew, and covers more technical details involved with the filming of the movie, though it does contain some of the same information found in the other featurette. Lastly is the audio commentary with the director and screenwriters Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi. While certainly not the best commentary I've heard, it is quite informative and worth a listen for fans of the film. English subtitles are also included.

Summary:
Snow Day is great family entertainment: it has been awhile since I saw a film I enjoyed this much with my younger brother and sister. With terrific picture, sound, and extras, Snow Day comes highly recommended.
