Solo Mia
Solo Mia is a fairly good and at times suspenseful Spanish film about marital abuse.
The film is about a a married couple Angela (Paz Vaga of Sex and Lucia fame) and Joaquin (Sergei Lopez of With a Friend Like Harry) who seemingly have the perfect marriage. But soon after the birth of their child Joaquin begins to abuse Angela. In time it becomes serious and Angela decides to leave.
Angela tries to get help from the legal authorities to protect her but it is not enough. She finally figures the only way to end the abuse and the threats is to take matters into her own hands.
There is no secret that this is a revenge flic of sorts because the film opens with a scene of Angela getting a bit of retribution and then flashes back to the beginning of their relationship. Joaquim is a man who has fits of rage and Lopez (who plays bad guys pretty well) brings a certain gravity to the roll that makes it all the more believable.
The film deals with a serious problem that many woman face and tries to spice it up a bit to make good drama. But somehow it all feels a bit thin. Partly it could be because this is the first length feature film by Javier Balaguer. Although the acting is quite good.
Video:
The film is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and looks excellent. The film has many interiors and is quite colorful. The 'revenge' scene which opens the film is shot in a bluish bleached tint to heighten the horror but the rest of the film is shot colorful and sharp.
Audio:
Audio is in Dolby 5.1 and sounds great. There is not much of a sound track but the dialogue and the regular foley sound are strong.
Extras:
There is a 16 minute Making of documentary that features interviews with the cast and crew as well as a discussion about the dilemna of spousal abuse. There is also a photo gallery, trailers and filmographies.
Final Thoughts:
Solo Mia is a tough little Spanish drama about spousal abuse and the lengths that one woman goes to when the legal system fails her. Fairly well directed the film is above average although not great. The extras are good enough for the film.
