Mallrats
The Movie:
Mallrats is one of my personal favorite movies. By famed writer/director Kevin Smith, Mallrats was his second movie, following on the heels of Clerks and before his more successful movies Chasing Amy and Dogma. Mallrats follows T.S. and Brodie as they go to the mall after being dumped by their girlfriends. They meet up there with Jay and Silent Bob amongst others and cause havok and have fun. Mallrats is just a hilarious movie that I can watch over and over again. Every scene is funny and the dialogue between the characters is top-notch (as with all of Kevin Smith's other films).
The Picture:
I could find no noticeable faults with the picture in this DVD. The colors are crisp and the anamorphic widescreen presentation is beautiful. Universal has put out a great disc and I just couldn't find anything wrong with it.
The Sound:
Ditto with the Sound. No noticeable faults. The reason I scored it a little lower is that it just seems that the sound could have been better. There could have been more emphasis at parts but when viewing and hearing this as Smith would have wanted it, the sound is great. Also, make sure you watch the soundtrack presentation of "Build me up Buttercup."
The Extras:
The extras are amazing on this disc. I love the way that they presented the deleted scenes. Kevin Smith (director) and Scott Mosier (producer) prefaced the scene as to why it was cut and how it affected the movie as a whole. They also referenced these scenes in the audio commentary which is just great. It provides insight into the filming process and how the whole movie changed when certain scenes were deleted. Also included on the disc is live footage from the commentary session (accessed via the angles button) which shows how the commentary was narrated and also showed all of the guys having fun with each other. The extras on this disc are top-notch and this truly is a Collector's Edition.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, if you like Kevin Smith, there's no way you can pass this DVD up. Featuring over an hour of deleted scenes amongst other great extras, this Universal Collector's Edition is a must have in any fan's collection. The commentary is great and the movie itself can be watched over and over again - hilarious every time.
