Real World You Never Saw: New Orleans

The Movie:

At this point, "New Orleans" has to be at least the eighth or ninth edition of MTV's throwing a cast of twenty-somethings into a house to live together and yell or flirt with one another. I've personally watched the show less and less over the years, going from intensely watching the first couple of editions to maybe only watching this one once or twice - and not finding it that entertaining.

This is the second "Real World: You Never Saw" presentation that I've seen, and like the one that was shown for "Hawaii" it's almost entertaining in that way where it knows exactly what it is; a pre-packaged product showing silly, pseudo-naughty footage of the cast talking about sex or seeing one of the camera people falling over something/bumping into one of the cast members. There's also some bathroom humor thrown in for good measure. In a series of interviews that feel rather forced, the group introduces what you're about to see.

Pretty much, what you get here is a 55 minute extension of the show - in other words, like the deleted scenes you get on most DVDs, imagine this as the "deleted scenes" section of the "Real World". Like most deleted scenes sections of DVDs, some scenes are entertaining and some aren't - it works that way here as well, with some scenes providing a few laughs as the cast goof around (in one scene they play around with a driving directions service in their car), but some other scenes are pretty flat. Any thing that gets a little bit too "over the top" here is bleeped or covered in some way.

The one thing that this disc is missing that the "Hawaii" disc had - which made it worth the price - was a commentary by former cast member Puck. You'll remember Puck as the gross guy who got kicked out a few seasons ago. His commentary, completely ripping on the Hawaii cast members, was one of the funniest things I've heard, completely taking apart the cast and the series. I would have liked to have heard him rip this footage apart as well.

The DVD

VIDEO/AUDIO: The video quality is generally what you would expect - a mix of full frame and some letterboxed footage that does look slightly better than broadcast quality. Sharpness and detail are fine, although not terribly remarkable. Colors are natural and pleasing as well. There are some minor problems that come up, such as a little bit of shimmering and grain, but I didn't see any pixelation or other problems. The stereo audio does fine with what it is - it's mainly dialogue and the occasional bit of music, which doesn't sound great in any way, but acceptable.

MENUS:: Animated menus provide background music and other show-themed images.

EXTRAS:: Additional short general or audition clips are available in the cast bios section. Also, a promo for "You Never Saw: Hawaii" and tips on how to addition from Hawaii cast member Amaya.

Final Thoughts: Fans of the show will be pleased with this package, which is available for as low as $10.49.
