I've been a fan of anime for years, with shows such as Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets and Robotech. These days it's rare for me to get into a whole new anime series, with the exceptions being Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and With Hunter Robin. Speaking from experience, it can often be intimidating for a fan to get into a new series for the cost alone if nothing else. Let's face it, we Anime fans usually get taken to the cleaners by these distribution companies, paying upwards of $20 a volume for a DVD that could have as few as episodes on it. Thankfully, as the trend has started to edge more to Entire Series releases, it takes some of the financial pressure off of prospective fans, but then the question remains: "Will I Even Like This Show?"

Sailor Moon has been an Anime stalwart for some time and Sailor Moon Super S: The Complete Uncut TV Set is the fourth and final season of the long running series. Picking up from the previous Season,Sailor Moon S in which the villains were seeking out the "Pure Heart Crystal", Sailor Moon Super S pits Sailor Moon and her Scouts against the Amazon Agents of the Dead Moon Circus. The Amazons, 2 different groups over the course of the Season, are searching for Pegasus, the protector of dreams who resides in the dreams of the pure of heart. They hunt Pegasus by kidnapping young women and viewing their dreams through their "Dream Mirror". It's up to Sailor Moon and the Scouts to save the women and keep Pegasus safe from Queen Nehelenia who needs Pegasus and the power of dreams to help keep her young and beautiful forever.

If that seems like a lot to keep track of, it isn't really. Considering most of the series follows a rote formula that changes very little from episode to episode. Apparently this differs somewhat from the earlier Seasons of Sailor Moon which seemed to contain an ongoing story rather than a series of self-contained episodes with recurring characters and themes to link them together. Only the last set of episodes, contained on the 6th and 7th discs in this Seven DVD set, had any sort of continuity and sense of continuing storyline in them. Since just about every episode has the same basic storyline, it's difficult to watch the following episodes, since you know you're going to be in for more of the same.

The episodes included on this Seven Disc set are:

The DVD:

Picture: Sailor Moon Super S: The TV Series Complete Collection (Special Uncut Version) is presented in Full Screen (1.33:1). The transfer seemed a bit off with a lot of footage appearing washed out with some noticeable grain and dust on the print. With the way some people rave about this series, it seems that Pioneer could have done a better job with the restoration.

Visually, the series is nothing to write home about. Apart from some nice character design and a few watercolor backdrops, most of the show looks like it was done on a limited budget, with several animation sequences used again and again in each episode that prove to be taxing on the viewer after awhile. The recycled animation coupled with the repetitive storyline make for limited enjoyment overall.

Audio: This DVD set features an English Dolby Digital 2.0 and Japanese Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track. While I normally like to listen to the Original Japanese audio track when I'm watching Anime, this just wasn't the case with Sailor Moon Super S. The Original Japanese Mono Track is in terrible condition and quickly made up my mind as to sound options for viewing this Series.

The English track was also in Mono, but sounded 110% better with clearer dialogue and pleasing music (I can't believe I just said that!) without all the considerable wear that the Original evidenced. To keep as true to the Original viewing experience as I could, I did watch it with the subtitles on, just in case the English Dub tried to slip something by me, which it did, on an almost constant and tireless basis, with the most common subterfuge involving the cover-up of the questionable sexual orientations of certain characters.

Extras: This 7 DVD Set contains a few extra features scattered over several discs. These include the Original Japanese Opening, Karaoke Versions of the Opening and Closing animations and a Stills Gallery.

Conclusion: While it is true that Sailor Moon is one of the most popular and enduring of all Anime series, it seems like the only need to pick up Sailor Moon Super S: The Complete Uncut TV Set is if you've bought the other 3 Seasons of this Series. I can't imagine someone picking this title up and enjoying it without having a past experience and appreciation for this Series. As a whole, much of the show is formulaic and repetitious, but things do pick up at the end of the Season. That's still not enough for me to recommend this to anyone other than fans of Sailor Moon. Everyone else should just Skip It.
