Blade: Platinum Edition
The Movie:
Blade is probably one of the best vampire movies. The producer and director created their own mythology of vampires and they succeed. Wesley Snipes plays Blade, a vampire slayer who is determined to stop La Magra from returning to the real world and also trying to save a girl from turning into a vampire. The action scenes are extremely intense and the whole story moves along quite quickly to a great conclusion. Blade is fun to watch no matter the setting and looks great on DVD.
The Picture:
As stated above, this movie looks great on DVD. The whole movie is either extremely dark or extremely bright (listen to the commentary for more on this) and the DVD shows this off superbly. The colors are crisp, evident in the blood and dark colors of Blade and the settings. The picture is extremely high quality and the special effects look great in this movie.
The Sound:
The sound behind this movie is exceptional. The special effects require a lot of sound effects and they are done very well in this movie. The soundtrack really stands out and during the action scenes, the sound is pristine and is truly evident on this great Platinum Edition.
The Extras:
There's a reason this movie is in the Platinum Series by New Line - features, features, and more features. This disc is full of features. It has 2 commentaries - one with the cast and crew and one with the composer along with the isolated score. The menus are also spectacular as they transition from one to another. It's simply amazing how many extras they fit on this DVD. There's deleted scenes, a great alternate ending, and the production sketches and designs are also great to see how this movie progressed from comic to the screen. Although the commentary is a bit bland at times, it does provide great insight into the movie and different nuances of the film. It also includes a complete script for those of you with DVD-ROM drives along with web links and more.
Conclusion:
New Line has outdone themselves with this Platinum Edition - and for a truly fitting movie. They elaborated on the mythology and provide great depth to the vampire clans. The disc features pristine sound and picture along with a boat-load of extras. It is also anamorphic and contains just about everything you could ask for in a DVD. An excellent DVD. A must have for any DVD collector
