Review:
Movie:
Best of AtomFilms 2000: Premier Films is one of several recent DVDs from www.atomfilms.com and is available via their website for $24.99; they also offer several money-saving collections that include this release.

Included on this DVD are ten short films which they claim either have high number of site views, significant syndicated requests, and/or notable festival awards. The short films, along with their country of origin and running time, include: Bobby Loves Mangos (USA, 20:00), Don't Think Twice (Canada, 10:12), Free Parking (Germany, 7:00), Grey (Belgium, 11:05), In God We Trust (USA, 16:35), In the Mirror of the Sky (Mexico, 10:00), Mutual Love Life (USA, 11:07), Maaz (France, 8:00), Plug (USA, 10:30), and Endgame (USA, 8:00).

Of the included short films, only a few of them I found to be exceptional; some of them were simply either too boring or weird for me. The highlight of the disc, hands down and without question is the fabulous In God We Trust. Simply put, its awesome. It's a comedy about one guy who finds himself with a bit of extra time after dying to try and score some extra "points" by doing good deeds to avoid Hell. I watched this one several times; my dad even snuck it away to work to show everyone. Two other short films on the disc that I thought were quite good are Mutual Love Life, the story of a guy who sells insurance for relationships, and Free Parking, a tale of road rage in a parking lot. Out of the remaining seven, Bobby Loves Mangos, In the Mirror of the Sky, and Endgame are the only others worth watching, though they're mostly average. The other four shorts on the disc are worth skipping completely.

Please note that the scores for Movie and Repeat Viewing above are an average. Scored individually, the top three short films would score: In God We Trust (5/5), Mutual Love Life (4.5/4), and Free Parking (4/3).

Picture:
The aspect ratios and picture quality really varies from short to short. The majority of them are in widescreen, though a few are in full frame. Generally, the picture quality is average; most have a little grain, lines, specks or other defects, though some suffer from quite a bit. Some have an overly soft look to them as well; none of them are reference quality, which is to be expected from short films. In God We Trust, the highlight of this collection, looks quite good with few noticeable defects.

Sound:
All of the short films on the disc are presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono. In most, the dialogue remains crisp and clean, though in a few, the occasional bit of dialogue can be a bit hard to understand. I didn't detect any distortion in the tracks either.

Extras:
Extras include a forced ad for AtomFilms when you pop the disc in, brief notes about Atom Films, and short supplements for four of the films. Plug has a four minute making of featurette, Endgame features a short interview clip from the director and the producer/star, In the Mirror of the Sky has an almost three minute interview with the director and a behind the scenes glimpse, and Mutual Love Life has a very short interview with the filmmaker/star. I would've really liked to see the supplements be a bit longer; a commentary or even anything for In God We Trust would've made a good addition, considering how great the short was.

Summary:
Fans of short films in general will find three main reasons to pick up Best of AtomFilms 2000: Premier Films on DVD: In God We Trust, Mutual Love Life, and Free Parking. The other films can be considered a "bonus," as these are the must-watch ones. Recommended – if you can find it for a more reasonable price than $25.
