Full House: Season 1

The Movie:
A gem of cheesy 80's television, anyone who's in their late teens or twenties these days will likely have at least somewhat fond memories of growing up watching "Full House" during its run from 1987 to 1995. The show, for those not familiar, revolved around Danny Tanner (Bob Saget), a sports broadcaster turned morning show host who tried to take care of his three young daughters (Candance Cameron, Jodie Sweetin and Ashley/Mary-Kate Olsen) with the help of his brother-in-law (John Stamos) and their comedian friend (Dave Coulier.)
The show seems somewhat dated now, but it's still a cute series that offered comfortable family comedy/drama. The lines are a little silly and the plots are the kind of sitcom fluff where everyone's problems are wrapped up by the end of thirty minutes, but the characters are memorable and the cast works great together. Speaking of cast chemistry, it's fascinating to watch the show's original, unaired pilot, which featured actor John Posey instead of Bob Saget, who only became available after the pilot was shot. Posey's not a good fit for the role, and the unaired pilot really doesn't work nearly as well as it does with Saget in the lead role.

The DVD
VIDEO: "Full House" is presented in the show's original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect ratio on this first season set. The show, which was shot on tape, looks fine here, if not great. Sharpness and detail are satisfactory, as the image looked consistently crisp and clear, but not terribly sharp or detailed.
Some noise appeared in the presentation at times, along with a couple of moments of shimmering. However, edge enhancement wasn't seen and only a couple of brief moments of pixelation were spotted. No visible wear or damage was seen on the elements used. Colors looked bright and nicely saturated, with no smearing or other concerns.
SOUND: "Full House" is presented in stereo. The audio seemed perfectly fine, with clear dialogue, crisp music and an overly aggressive laugh track.
EXTRAS: Creator Jeff Franklin offers an audio commentary on "Our Very First Show" and "Mad Money". Franklin's tracks offer an enjoyable look at the first season show, as the creator discusses his inspiration for the series, initial reactions and some of the issues and changes that went on in the early days of production. Overall, these tracks are quite good. The other main supplement is the original, unaired pilot episode, which is present on the first disc. It's interesting to see - although I have no idea about the rest of John Posey's performances, he's really not very good in the Danny role. Finally, there's an optional subtitle trivia track on "The Miracle of Thanksgiving".
Final Thoughts: It didn't sit as well with me now as it did when I was a kid, but those who remember growing up with the series will likely be fond of the ability to revisit the series with this set. Warner Brothers provides a nice set, with enjoyable supplements and fine audio/video quality. Recommended for fans.
