Not happy with being a only a game show host, Chuck Woolery has decided to step into the world of instructional DVDs. Bass Fishing: The basics with Chuck Woolery is one such DVD. While not a professional fisherman, Chuck decides to enlist some help from a friend of his, BASS champion Michael O'Shea. This unintentionally funny instructional DVD might not show you exactly how to catch fish, but I'll be the first to admit I did actually learn something from this DVD. The DVD has a running time of just under sixty minutes, and is divided into 18 chapters each on a specific topic.

The chapter listing and topics covered are:
1. Introduction
2. Rods & Reels
3. Tools of the Trade
4. Casting Technique
5. The Palomar Knot
6. Baits
7. Top Water Baits
8. Jerk Baits
9. Crank Baits
10. Spinner Baits
11. Jigs
12. Soft Plastic Baits
13. When to catch fish: The seasons
14. When to catch fish: Time of day
15. When to catch fish: Clear & Cloudy days
16. When to catch fish: Lakes, ponds and rivers
17. Fishing with the Kids
18. Closing

The chapters on specific things such as Rods & Reels, really only cover the very basics as they try to cover as much ground as possible in the short timeframe.

The DVD

How's it look:

Aside from the fact that the DVD looks to have been shot in a single take, the video is quite often washed out, over exposed and the colors are quite poor. I've even seen better underwater footage from cable access TV. It's a shame, because they could have had some good footage of the bass striking the lures but opted not to.
How's it sound:

The sound is simply adequate for the presentation. Both Chuck and Michael are heard quite easily, even though they sometimes misspeak a line which remains unedited.

Extras:

None.

Closing remarks:

If you didn't know much about bass fishing before watching this DVD, chances are that you'll not gain too much from it because the topics are covered far too quickly to impart any real knowledge. I said it's unintentionally funny, and that is mainly due to the production quality and the fact that both men flub a few lines, yet they remain in the finished product. There's even a scene when demonstrating a casting technique where Michael (the pro) is telling Chuck to do something one way, yet Chuck is doing it completely incorrectly. As I said, if you didn't know how to fish before, you still won't after watching this. Skip it.
