Movie:
BioHunter, an anime film originally released in 1995, is now on DVD courtesy of Urban Vision. Based on the comic by Fujihiko Hosono, Yoshiaki Kawajiri (of Ninja Scroll and Wicked City fame) wrote the adaptation and Yozo Sato directed (contrary to the DVD case, which claims that Kawajiri directed).

In Tokyo, a virus is being spread around that turns people into demons if it infects them. Two professors of molecular biology, Komada and Koshigaya, investigate and try to help those infected. On one such occasion, Komada is bit by a demon, and he is infected with the virus. However, due to his stronger immune system, he is able to mostly control the virus and limit its effects on him. Afterwards, they discover that a demon serial killer is terrorizing the city and while on the trail, they cross paths with Sayaka, the granddaughter of the famed psychic Bokudoh Murakami. Sayaka tells them that her grandfather knows the identity of the serial killer, though she can't seem to find him. They agree to help her locate him, so they can neutralize the killer. The serial killer, meanwhile, has his own men trying to find Bokudoh. The BioHunters must find him first and discover the demon's identity before more people are killed.

BioHunter was a well-written and interesting anime film that, if anything, might be too dark and graphic for some people. The film also seemed a bit too short at 60 minutes; I would've liked to see some more development or background on Komada, along with some more screen time devoted to his demon.

Picture:
BioHunter is presented in 1.33:1 full frame. The print used shows some line noise and shimmer throughout the film, though its definitely more pronounced during the beginning. There are also a few marks throughout the film, though none are too distracting. Despite these flaws, the film remains quite watchable and color saturation is great during throughout.

Sound:
BioHunter is presented in a newly remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 English track and the original Dolby Stereo 2.0 Japanese track. The 5.1 track was rather weak in the rears and directionality was mainly limited to voices, but the sounds were better separated in comparison to the 2.0 track. Dialogue was crisp and clean with no distortion in both tracks.

Extras:
Extras include: trailers for this film and eleven other anime releases, including Wicked City, Wild 7, and Dragon Slayer; storyboards with the option to compare them to the finished scene from the movie; and the website link.

Summary:
Japanese animation fans that like their anime dark and graphic should give BioHunter at least a rent, if not a purchase. Recommended.
