Kelly Clarkson: Behind Hazel Eyes

The Movie:
I've reviewed a lot of music publicity programs on DVD - including ones from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson. They always get high traffic on the site and they're pretty entertaining, despite the fact that they all ususally follow the same format - star talks about what inspires them, chats up fans and works in the studio. Each of them takes on a glossy and media-ready approach to the interviews.
Kelly Clarkson's "Behind Hazel Eyes" offers a behind-the-scenes look at the American Idol winner's life and her musical ambitions. However, the documentary takes an entirely different approach, as Clarkson seems entirely willing to act like a natural goofball throughout the entire proceedings. During the show, her fans talk about what an "everygirl" she seems like and they want to get to know her more. "Behind Hazel Eyes" has her going on a tour of her high school and her old hangouts through her old hometown.
However, instead of just the usual stories about how wonderful everyone was (although we do hear about teachers), we see Clarkson revisit the (extremely dangerous looking) playground device that all the kids wanted. When she got on it, she wound up hitting her head and knocking out her two front teeth. Clarkson says she was happy, because it meant she'd get two dollars under her pillow. She also gets up on her high school stage and tries to do a remarkably funny restaging of her high school performance of Prince's "When Doves Cry."
We also see Kelly attempt bowling and also, try camping - where she attempts, with not much success, to start a campfire. It's all priceless, but also pretty endearing. The second half of the 40 minute main documentary has Kelly discussing her work, chatting from in the studio and talking about performing live.
Overall, it's a brief, but entertaining program - Clarkson's fans should enjoy it, and those who are forced by Clarkson fans to watch it should find it funny. The only irritating part of the whole thing was that, between each segment, they show the exact same little montage clip.
The DVD
VIDEO: "Behind Hazel Eyes" is presented in what appears to be approximately 1.78:1 non-anamorphic widescreen. The picture quality seemed fine, as the program (likely shot on video) looked crisp and clear. Sharpness wasn't remarkable, but the picture at least offered nice detail and definition.
Some minor shimmering appeared a few times during the program, but otherwise, the picture quality didn't suffer from any flaws. Colors remained bright and crisp, with no smearing or other faults.
SOUND: "Behind Hazel Eyes" was presented in Dolby 2.0 on the DVD screener that I got for review, and given the documentary nature of the program (it's not a concert DVD), I'm guessing that this is the final presentation. Audio quality was generally fine - a couple of tiny moments sounded scratchy, but otherwise, dialogue and music remained crisp and clear.
EXTRAS: Kelly's baby pictures are shown in a brief featurette, we see a video diary of the camping trip, some bloopers from the documentary and a "making of" for the "Breakaway" music video. There is supposed to be music videos and/or tracks on the final DVD, but they were not included on my review copy.
Final Thoughts: "Behind Hazel Eyes" was an entertaining program, as these kinds of programs go, as Clarkson was hilarious and the show offered a nice mix of Clarkson's life and her musical goals. The DVD offers satisfactory image/sound quality and a couple of fun supplements. Recommended for fans.
