Pimp My Ride: Season 1

The Movie:
One of the best - if not the best - shows that MTV has ever created, "Pimp My Ride" has rapper Xzibit coming to the houses of various folks in order to "Pimp Their Ride" - in other words, turn a car that is held together (in some cases literally) by bubble gum and duct tape into something utterly incredible. Xzibit drives the car over to West Coast Customs, where the brilliant motor scientists at WCC throw thousands of dollars - sometimes more than $20,000 - into cars that look like they cost a fraction of a grand.
The results? Dazzling new paint jobs, new tires/rims, onboard entertainment centers and other amazing little gadgets and tricked-out features, such as a river flowing down the backseat, an espresso machine or a goldfish tank in the backseat. When the crew couldn't do anything with a car in the last episode that was literally welded together from two separate cars, they buy an all-new car to work with. I don't even have an interest in cars, myself, but I watch this show each week with fascination to see what over-the-top feature the crew will come up with next. The only oddity is that there's only a few episodes I can remember where they've gone in to replace the engines of these cars.
Rapper Xzibit is funny and entertaining as the host, and the crew of West Coast Customs are all great characters, as well. "Pimp My Ride" has reportedly been renewed for at least a few more seasons, and that's great to hear. It's a fun show and will likely grab the attention of even those who don't drive.

The DVD
VIDEO: "Pimp My Ride" is presented by Paramount in 1.33:1 full-frame, the show's original aspect ratio. Picture quality is great, coming in about equal (and maybe even a little better) than how I remember these episodes appearing when I watched them on digital cable. Sharpness and detail are very good, as the image remained crisp and well-defined throughout with no inconsistencies.
The image didn't suffer from any considerable flaws. A little trace of shimmer and pixelation appeared briefly once or twice, but neither of these issues were really even noticable. Edge enhancement is not present and, not surprisingly, the elements are in perfect condition. Colors remain bright and well-saturated, with no smearing.
SOUND: "Pimp My Ride" is presented in 2.0 audio, and audio quality is fine, with clear dialogue and music.
EXTRAS: The third disc are where you'll find the supplements. First off, there's a series of deleted scenes that are organized by episode. Then there's a few minutes worth of very funny outtakes. "West Coast Customs: What We Drive" has some of the members of the West Coast crew giving tours of their cars. Travis Barker of Blink 182 shows what can be done with an older car as he gives a tour of what was done to update his 1954 Cadillac. Finally, there's an Xzibit music video and previews for other Paramount titles.
Final Thoughts: "Pimp My Ride" is a terrific show - funny, entertaining, and always full of surprises. It's great to have the first season here, commercial-free. Paramount's DVD edition provides very good audio/video quality and a nice helping of supplements. Highly Recommended, even for those without their own set of wheels.
