The Movie:

Cirque Du Soleil is the popular performance troupe that have taken general circus stunts and events and made them into an often breathtaking combination of aerobatics, art and beautiful costumes. Although I had only heard about the performers previously, I was stunned to see just how good they were in this excellent performance that's at times serious and also rather funny now and then.

It's also good that Columbia/Tristar has gained the DVD rights, since the intricate costumes and lighting should be seen in the best possible way at home if you can't get out for the show itself. The image quality does an outstanding job at showcasing every last detail of the sets and costumes, and colors almost leap off the screen. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio also puts the viewer front row for the show.

The DVD

VIDEO: Columbia/Tristar presents "Dralion" in the shows original filmed ratio of 1.78:1 and the picture is also anamorphic. Like most work from the studio, the picture quality is impressive, although the show's beautiful costumes and sets translate into a picture that's at times so striking that it could serve as demonstration material for those looking to show off the picture quality of DVD. Sharpness and detail to the image are both excellent; there are a cuple of moments where the picture looked the slightest bit soft, but this was a minor complaint as the majority looked well-defined and impressively crisp.

As for flaws, there certainly didn't seemed to be any marks or other problems that appeared during the presentation on the image. Shimmering is also not visible, and pixelation is so minor as to be hardly noticable. Colors are the real treat here; the costumes show off a wide range of rich, vibrant colors that look gorgeous here, well-saturated and beautiful to look at. This is excellent work from Tristar, and those who are fans of the show will love the experience of watching the presentation at home with this level of quality to the image.

SOUND: "Dralion" is presented in French Dolby Digital 5.1, and the audio presentation is quite entertaining. Although not a consistently agressive experience, the musical presentation (and the music is excellent) envelops the viewer quite well, coming clearly and warmly from all sides. Surrounds are also used occasionally for crowd noise (cheering) between parts of the show. Paired with the exceptionally good picture quality, the highly enjoyable audio quality completes the experience well.

MENUS:: The menus are not animated nor do they feature music. They are colorful, though, and easily navigated.

EXTRAS:

Multi-Angle: 4 of the acts are presented in 3 angles, which can be changed with the angle button on the remote. It's nice to be able to get another perspective on these 4 scenes; the feature is available in a separate menu where you select the scene you want to watch with different angles.

Featurette: This is a well-produced 22 minute documentary that will give viewers a further appreciation of the talent involved behind the show as we're taken behind the scenes to watch rehearsals and practices as the dancers attempt to perfect their routines. In addition, we learn more about the history of Cirque Du Soleil and this particular project.

Trailers:Trailers for Dralion, Quidam, and Riverdance: Live in New York.

Final Thoughts:

Positive: The show is fantastic, and very entertaining. Tristar's DVD presents the feature with magnificent picture and audio quality, along with some enjoyable extras.

Negative: Nothing negative to say about the DVD.
