The Movie

Aesesino en serio (aka Serious Killer) is built upon a pretty goofy premise that would be more at home on late night Cinemax than in a feature film. A grizzled veteran cop, Comandante Martinez (Jesus Ochoa) is tracking a priest, Padre Gorkisolo (Santiago Segura), who kills women with orgasms. Yup, you read that right - this black farce that waffles between taking itself seriously and winking at the audience unspools in the grand tradition of the dark European sex comedy perfected by the likes of Bunuel and Almodovar.

Humorously billed on the packaging as "a sexy comedy set amidst smiling women" (I can almost picture Stewie of "Family Guy" reading that tag line), Aesesino en serio follows Martinez as he struggles to learn the ancient secrets of pleasure so as to hunt down the mysterious killer and end his reign of orgasmic terror. It's pitched with a straight face and director Antonio Urrutia does his best to keep things from becoming too absurd - but by the film's climax (pun semi-intended) you'll likely be worn out by the one-note joke that fuels this forgettable flick.

Aesesino en serio is, however, an example of cinema that Americans have yet to master without the results ending up on the aforementioned late night cable channel - for what it's worth, the production values and intent here do seem somewhat more noble than "Lord of the G-Strings."

The DVD

The Video:

Aesesino en serio is presented in a occasionally rough-looking but watchable 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The print looks aged at points and also lacks sharpness but offers decent looking skin tones and nice solid blacks.

The Audio:

The only audio option onboard is Spanish Dolby 2.0 stereo with optional English subtitles. There's the occasional flub ("Holly crap!" is an early example that springs to mind) but for the most part, they keep up with the action well. The audio is mostly relegated to dialogue and the odd pop song so there's no real workout for the speakers to be found here.

The Extras:

The supplemental material consists of two non-anamorphic theatrical trailers and filmographies for the cast.

Final Thoughts:

Aesesino en serio is worth a rental for the curiosity factor (and perhaps the frequent nudity by a succession of lovely Latin ladies) - unless you're a fan of cheesy Spanish sexified whodunits, I'd save this for a rental at the very least.
