Synopsis:

Back in 1998, two end-of-the-world films dominated the box office. Armageddon was one. It dealt with more eye candy than substance and was a great thrill ride as long as you didn't look to closely. The other was Deep Impact. More of a "Thinking Man's" Armageddon if you will. The story begins with the discovery of an asteroid apparently on it's way to Earth. Initial estimates discount the potential damage this would cause should it make contact with Terra Firma. However, after closer inspection, it's determined that the Asteroid is actually two as opposed to one. The first is small enough o do damage but nothing that Earth could not survive. The second however is the size of Texas and should it make contact we're talking E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event). Time has been lost in the race to head off these comets so, an International task force has been dispatched to intercept the comets and blow them off their course. Only time will tell if their efforts will be in vain. Deep Impact is an immensely moving and tremendously involving story that takes you through a wealth of emotions and experiences. Definitely not a film to be missed.

Audio/Video:

The audio and video for Deep Impact are perfection! DreamWorks pictures is definitely one of the best in the business when it comes to transfer quality and audio presentation so, it comes as no surprise that these elements are defiantly reference material! The audio is a blistering 5.1 DD experience that puts the HT in its entirety to a serious workout. The center is perfectly delineated and the surrounds are well used throughout the film. The sub gets put through its paces as the film progresses and the audio in a word get better and better as the film goes on! The video is equally remarkable in its presentation. The blacks are deep and true. The scenes in Outer Space are simply marvelous to behold and the colors and widescreen transfer are magnificent.

Extras:

The only extras available on the disc are the film's teaser and theatrical trailers. Both are presented in 2.0 and are extremely well produced. The web page for this film bore more extras than the disc itself. Given the treatment recent DreamWorks discs have received i.e.…Gladiator and The Prince Of Egypt, it's definitely out of character for them. However, since it was one of their first discs, we'll excuse them this time. Hopefully, a reissue loaded with extras will show up and a definitive release for this monumental effort will exist. Until then, this disc is definitely capable of portraying all the wonderful elements the movie contains.

Overall:

I love space movies, so anything that has man venturing heavenward has my attention. This doesn't always end in a good viewing experience but I can still hope can't I! In any event, Deep Impact is a colossal film in every proportion. It totally immerses you in the action and at some point; it ceases being a film and makes you believe the events unfolding onscreen. Morgan Freeman is an Actor's actor in that he raises the bar and brings performances that demand his supporting cast mates bring the same intensity and depth. With his incredible "acting without looking like he's acting", he again submits a performance that is to be applauded. Put simply, Deep Impact is a great piece of filmmaking that fits in every collection. Highly Recommended
