Background, part 1: Playboy Enterprises has long provided fantasies for eager young males by offering up their curvy cuties for consumption. Aside from the usual criticism of the gals being airbrushed and made to look far more desirable than they are in real life, the well known company has seen better years of late. Once a powerful publisher with a string of clubs, founder Hugh Hefner has admittedly led a charmed life yet fallen on hard times of late. The clubs failed, his short lived television show was cancelled, readership is down, and Hugh has handed over the reigns of the company to his daughter as he advances into his twilight years. Admittedly, the man still has plenty to offer but the world is not the same place when he offered up the first nudes of starlet Marilyn Monroe so many years ago. Even back in the 1970's, companies like Penthouse and Hustler provided more of what the public wanted, offering up increasingly hardcore material that the jaded masses wanted. These days, Playboy is akin to watered down Erotica when the growing trend is for Ultra Hardcore Porn with Playboy being viewed pretty much as a relic of an age long gone. In short, Playboy has become domesticated to the point where many men view it as the fast food of the magazine world.

Background, part 2: Fans of fine cuisine know that the better things in life take time and cost money. If you want food that gives you a special thrill, you'll be shelling out some big bucks and putting up with snobbish waiters for the privilege of doing so. In a world becoming more driven by convenience than quality, food has become more of a quick break from the world we live in, regardless of the lack of taste or poor nutrition it provides. In short, welcome to the wonderful world of fast food. No company is better known throughout the world for fast food than McDonald's; a company started a long time ago by an entrepreneur names Ray Kroc. Those of you who aren't familiar with the practices of the company have plenty to read up on and McDonalds is as much a part of the modern as any other aspect of modern life. Granted, their food seems to be terribly lame in terms of taste and nutritional quality but one can still appreciate their marketing savvy all the same.

Movie: Putting both of these two pop culture icons together was a fairly natural choice for the folks at Playboy and so today's DVD review of Playboy: Girls of McDonald's probably has some interest for fans of fast food and airbrushed women alike. To be fair, I haven't seen any of the hundreds of Playboy releases on DVD in a long time and it should be pointed out that the point of this DVD is not to compete with sexually explicit material such as that found in the links above. The point of anything released by Playboy is more to warm someone up (usually referred to as titillate) those who've never seen anything more hard core and this DVD is no exception.

Clocking in at a bit over 45 minutes, Playboy: Girls of McDonald's, showcases six young women who are suggested to either work at a McDonald's or have worked at one in some point in their past. The gals in order of appearance were Cristy Creighton, Amanda Bell, Jennifer Takach, Shawnna Getzinger, Wanda Coallier, and Randy Occhialini; each of them quite fetching and even a bit less artificial than most of the gals the Playboy magazine showcases every month. Each gal is given several minutes to tell how they came into the Playboy spotlight as they parade around in various stages of undress. This appears to be the standard formula used by Playboy in order to convince the viewer that these gals are just like the ones next door. To be frank, if my next door neighbors looked as hot as any of these six gals did, I'd become the most civic minded neighbor that ever existed but the reality of the matter is that they were enhanced and the artificial manner in which they were presented really detracted from their appeal in most cases.

Okay, there was no plot, no acting, no advanced theme other than showing a set of women prance around and look good. If the tease is enough for you (remembering that there's no sex taking place), you'll probably like this more than I did. I rated it as a Rent It for those who like the watered down material found on this DVD (it was too short with little replay value) but like all ratings, take it with a grain of salt. The day to day footage the DVD offers would've been a nice extra but as the primary reason for watching the show, it was too little to enjoy for long.

Picture: Playboy: Girls of McDonald's was presented in non-anamorphic widescreen with an aspect ratio of about 1.85:1. The colors were accurate, the MTV style editing probably appealing to those who are less discriminating, and the manner in which the show produced was very professional. There was no grain, no compression artifacts, and it was almost as well done as some of the Behind the Scenes features done by Wicked Pictures.

Sound: The audio was presented in the usual 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo. The mix between the clearly heard vocals and the generic music was decent but it wasn't anything special. There didn't appear to be a lot of separation between the channels and the dynamic range reminded me of cable television.

Extras: My copy of Playboy: Girls of McDonald's was a screener copy that had a picture of the front and back cover with a trailer for the show only. The back of the DVD box suggested there'd be a photogallery as well as a series overview of the Girls of… series but I've heard this wasn't the case (that the trailer was the overview and the two scanned covers were the photogallery) so buyer beware.

Final Thoughts: Playboy: Girls of McDonald's isn't exactly a thrilling release and seeing a large written warning at the bottom of the screen on a regular basis telling me it was a screener sure didn't help my frame of mind any but fans of seeing the fast food chain (McDonald's) get the Playboy treatment will find enough worth giving this one a look. The technical values and the limitations of the content aside, the gals were a breath of sunshine for those who appreciate attractive women so check it out.
