From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money
Synopsis: While not a direct sequel to 1995's surprise hit vampire flick starring George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis, this one was produced by Robert Rodriguez (Part 1's director) and Quentin Tarantino (Part 1's actor and screenwriter). Interestingly, though it takes place in Texas & Mexico, the movie was shot in South Africa! I guess vampires don't believe in apartheid either!
Okay, let's get right to the "heart" of the matter: Ex-con Buck ("T2" villain Robert Patrick) is lured back into a life of crime by his band of thieving buddies, led by the volatile, escaped bank robber Luther. This desperado sets up the next caper involving a bank heist. Only thing is, the bank's in Mexico! Anyway, he gathers up 3 more thugs (one of which is Brett Harrelson; yup, Woody's little bro'). On the way to meet up with the fellas, Luther is attacked by a vampire and converted. Now Luther starts putting the bite on the others. Only Buck is able to stay alive. He gets some help from Texas lawman Bo Hopkins ("Midnight Express") --the same cop who's been after Buck since day one. It's safe to say that the two men destroy the vampires and walk away to live another day.
Thoughts: I really enjoyed this movie. It was violent, sexy and politically-incorrect. Robert Patrick is no George Clooney, but he holds his own here. Plenty of well-known faces in the cast. Former Tiffani-Amber Thiessen ("90210") and Bruce Campbell ("Evil Dead" trilogy) have cameos early on as two victims while Muse Watson (better known as the killer from "I Know What You Did Last Summer 1 & 2") plays one of the robbers. One small role that intrigued me was that of the Mexican Sheriff, played by James Ryan. Who, you may ask? The James Ryan of those classic '80s South African karate flicks "Kill Or Be Killed" and "Kill And Kill Again." Those movies were cheesy fun! Moving on, director/screenwriter Scott Spiegel does a great job here while cinematographer Philip Lee's whacky camerawork deserves an "A".
The same can be said for the DVD; it is crystal-clear and sounds terrific. My only complaint (and it is a big one) is that Buena Vista has once again decided to piss the DVD consumers off by not adding any extras. No trailer, no featurettes...nada, zip, zero. All in all, "From Dusk 2" doesn't "suck", but the DVD is another matter. Rent it first; if you like it then I would suggest it for a purchase... ...hey, advise like that definitely doesn't suck!!
