Meatballs

The Movie: Meatballs is a hilarious comedy set in a summer camp starring Bill Murray. From 1979, this movie is a true classic and a great movie. Murray is Tipper, the camp counsellor and activities director at Camp North Star. The hijinks were fun at times, and it was fun to watch Murray in one of his earlier roles.

The Picture: The picture was actually pretty good for the movie for a transfer from a 1979 print. Not only does HBO provide us with a widescreen 1.85:1, but it's also anamorphic. But anamorphic transfer aside, the film still has some noticable defaults usually reserved for theaters. I noticed small faluts with the tranfser including scratches and dirt. They aren't easily noticeable, so the film has an overall good picture.

The Sound: The sound is offered in both Mono and Stereo for the English soundtrack. The French and Spanish tracks only contain the original mono transfer. I found both soundtracks acceptable, although I enjoyed the original mono track much more. It sounded more believable and since it is the way the movie was supposed to be viewed, that's the way I prefer.

The Extras: The extras are slim, if not non-existent. The disc has the usual interactive menus, cast and crew bios, theatrical trailer, and scene selections along with multiple languages and subtitles. Definitely nothing worth dropping $25 as suggested.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the Meatballs disc is good, but certainly not spectacular. If you enjoyed the movie, you'll probably enjoy the disc, but be disappointed by the lack of extras. Meatballs has it's good and funny parts, but is quite tame as far as comedies go. I enjoyed watching it and also enjoyed seeing Murray from one of his earlier roles.
