The Show
Is there a sports fan out there who doesn't enjoy a good blooper reel? Being able to watch the best of the best screw up like little leaguers is simply fun, and when the blooper looks like it might kill the athlete involved, for some reason, it's even more enjoyable. Unfortunately, this disc is less about bloopers and more about the fun the players have when they aren't pitching, catching, throwing or hitting.

Narrated by former "SNL" star Chris Kattan, the disc starts off with a rather pointless segment about how the players get to the game and how they pass the time during warm-ups. Things pick up in the second inning, with some good clips, including big collisions, falls and simple screw-ups. This is the kind of coverage this disc needs more of.

Things get a bit slow though, when the focus turns to the game's jesters, battles with weather and bugs. Watching these guys blow bubble gum and put it on each other's heads or smash shaving cream in each other's faces just doesn't equal funny. At least things pick up with a pair of stories about Boston's Manny Ramirez, who seems to be one of the odder oddballs in MLB.

A return to bloopers late in the game redeems the feature a bit, as some of the stronger segments are rolled out. Player concentration bloopers are pretty fun, along with Ruben Rivera's monumental second-base screw-up, Eddie Guardado's wife's description of his big catch and a great circus catch at a Padres game.

The brief respite falls by the wayside though, as the disc ends with a whimper, eschewing bloopers for press conferences, handshakes and celebrations, all of which are planned and calculated. Anyone can tell you, the reason why bloopers are fun is because they come out of nowhere and surprise you. The only surprise here is how few bloopers have been included.

The DVD
A one-disc release, "MLB Bloopers" has an animated full-frame main menu, with a baseball-themed menu offering a choice of "play ball" (play), "innings" (scene selection) and "extra innings" (bonus features). There are no audio options, subtitles or closed captioning, while the scene selection menu is a text list of nine innings.

The Quality
Delivered as a full-frame letterboxed widescreen transfer, the video on this disc is very nice, though the quality varies depending on its age. Anything recent is very clean, with proper color and detail, and no dirt, damage or digital artifacts.

The audio is presented in a Dolby Digital 2.0 track that is fine for the material, with very good game sound, strong music, and clean dialogue during the interviews.

The Extras
There's almost a half-hour of bonus footage included on this DVD, which is provided in 12 parts. The footage, like the deleted and extended scenes on many DVDs, expands upon moments in the main feature, providing either more interviews or uncut game footage. This is put to best use when showing how the 1993 Marlins' tarp got stuck and Ruben Rivera's base-running gaffe, and gives us a longer look at Ryan Dempster's Harry Carey imitation. Though no play-all option is provided, the segments run back to back.

The Bottom Line
Calling this "MLB Bloopers" is a bit of a stretch. What this really is, is the lighter side of baseball, with a splash of bloopers thrown in. So for an hour, you get to watch people who make way more money that you by playing a game, as they goof around and occasionally get hit in the crotch. If that's your cup of tea, this DVD will hit the spot, with a nice presentation and a handful of supplements. Otherwise, try and find one of those no-name blooper discs and enjoy some real mayhem.
