Dennis Miller: All In
As he ages, Dennis Miller is shifting from the proverbial angry young man to the proverbial cranky old fart, ranting about everything that's wrong with the world. Admittedly, Miller's dazzling vocabulary and obscure references ensure that no one will ever mistake him for a babbling buffoon, but his gradual, steady shift from left to right have earned him the enmity of comedy fans, while opening up his act to an entirely new audience that might have never checked him out. Hell, the guy spent some time in the "Monday Night Football" booth doing color commentary – would anyone have forseen that when he was making pithy comments on "Saturday Night Live"?
His seventh HBO special, Dennis Miller: All In, was broadcast live from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, with the comic holding forth on everything from liquefying donuts to gay marriage and Hillary Clinton's possible 2008 bid for the presidency or global warming's impact upon the earth. The more conservative yin to fellow HBO-er Bill Maher's liberal yang, Miller spends his hour seemingly rambling from unconnected topic to another, occasionally straying into what I hope is ironic riffs on so-stale-it's-decayed material: "I just flew into Vegas this afternoon and boy, they're turning over the flight attendants like they used to, are they?" Oy vey.
Ultimately, Dennis Miller: All In is fitfully amusing, occasionally slyly hilarious and more often than not, a solid set of jokes from one of the industry's greying vets – his Wikipedia-worthy digressions aside, Miller's brand of humor – complete with environmental group shills mid-joke – might depend upon your outlook on the world; whether or not you shove all your chips to the center of the table is up to you.
The DVDThe Video:
As originally broadcast on HBO, All In is presented on DVD with a very slick, crisp 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that shows off the sharp creases of Miller's tailored suit and his oh-so-chic eyeglasses. There's nothing to complain about here.
The Audio:The snide wisecracks and tongue-twisting allusions are heard clearly and free of distortion with the disc's Dolby 2.0 stereo soundtrack. Applause never overwhelms Miller's jokes and optional English subtitles are also included.
The Extras:There's not a scrap of supplemental material to be found here.
Final Thoughts:Dennis Miller: All In s fitfully amusing, occasionally slyly hilarious and more often than not, a solid set of jokes from one of the industry's greying vets – his Wikipedia-worthy digressions aside, Miller's brand of humor might depend upon your outlook on the world. Recommended.
