Wildboyz - Seasons 3 & 4

The Movie:
One of the best shows that MTV has created, "Wildboyz" pairs former "Jackass" members Steve-O and Chris Pontius, sending them off into the world to explore various local cultures and exotic animals. Essentially, imagine a real "Beavis and Butthead" crossed with something off the Discovery Channel. The show manages to be something completely unheard of on the channel: just a little bit educational. While Chris Pontius and Steve-O admit to little knowledge about the creatures that they run across (and the ones that run over them), the show occasionally brings on experts to discuss the creatures, often in their native environment. "Wildboyz" offers a lot of laughs and provides a good tour guide of the areas, as the show's cinematography is slicker and more beautiful than one might expect from a largely low-brow series.
It's bizarre and ridiculous - the two could easily get seriously injured at least several times per episode (the third and fourth seasons seem even more reckless) and yet, they keep energetically going after dangerous animals both large and small with the curiosity of little kids - psychotic little kids. Despite their goofy natures, the show's charm is that it's actually rather good-hearted.
The third and fourth seasons see the two former "Jackass" stars visiting India, Brazil, Kenya, "The Deep South", Mexico, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand and elsewhere. The show's structure - a series of bits with the two goofs trying to interact different cultures or wildlife - remains the same. A sampling of the highlights one will find on the set: a priceless sketch that has Chris and Steve-O making their own Bollywood-style video in India, taking part in a rather unorganized-looking running of a bull in a city in Mexico (and then the bull chases Steve-O and Chris around an apartment), being a "scratching post" for a tiger, going through Cosmonaut training in Russia, looking for sharks with David Hasselhoff and more.
This set includes all eight episodes from the third and fourth season, with the cuss words (or at least the majority of them) uncensored.

VIDEO: "Wildboyz" is presented in 1.78:1 non-anamorphic widescreen by Paramount. The picture quality was quite good, although there were some minor variations in quality due to the different kinds of video cameras occasionally employed in filming the series. Sharpness and detail are largely quite good, as the picture remained well-defined, for the most part. Some footage that appears to have been show with lower quality equipment looks a tad softer, but not terribly so.
The picture occasionally shows some minor edge enhancement and slight traces of pixelation, but neither issue caused any real distraction. The elements used seemed to be in fine condition, with no wear or other concerns. The show's natural color palette looked bright and well-saturated, with no smearing or other faults. Overall, the presentation looked about the same as the first season, although sharpness and detail seemed a bit more consistent.
SOUND: "Wildboyz" is presented in Dolby 2.0. Played back in Pro Logic II, the show's soundtrack meets expectations. Music has a nice spread across the front speakers, ambient sounds are clearly presented and dialogue remained easily heard and sounded natural.
EXTRAS: The episodes are offered with commentary from hosts Steve-O and Chris Pontious, creators Jeff Tremaine and Dimitry Elyashkevich, as well as guest stars Loomis Fall, Johnny Knoxville and Wee Man. The commentaries aren't particularly informative, but instead act as a big get-together where everyone shares a laugh and jokes about what happened on-set.
The third and final disc starts off with about 15 minutes of amusing outtakes. That's followed up by about 36 minutes of deleted scenes, which include an angry parrot, parasailing, meeting a woman with tons of scorpions and trying to eat some of them; visiting a temple of bats, trying to feed a giant anteater and more.
"Wildboyz: Over and Out" is a 25-minute documentary that covers the third and fourth seasons of the series as the cast and crew offer some behind-the-scenes stories from filming some of the segments from the 3rd and 4th seasons. There's also a top 10 favorite moments (24 minutes) featurette with comments from Chris and Steve-O. Finally, we get a behind-the-scenes featurette from the "Wildboyz" Nintendo DS ad and a photo gallery.
Final Thoughts: "Wildboyz: Seasons 3/4" is another hilarious round of Steve-O and Chris having incredible adventures around the globe. The DVD set offers very good audio/video quality, along with a nice helping of supplements. Recommended.
