The DVD

SOUND: "High Lonesome Sound" is presented in 20-bit DTS 5.1 audio on this DTS CD. If you would ask me what kind of music I liked a year or so ago, I'd probably respond with "anything but country." But that's changing somewhat as I've found that country has been begining to merge with other genres such as blues, jazz and pop for more of a modern sound in comparison to the previous stereotypical country sound that many are familiar with. Gill's "High Lonesome Sound" is an example of one of the more enjoyable country efforts that I've seen, with catchy instrumentals and interesting musical arrangements. As mixer Tony Brown states in a message in the liner notes, Gill's music lends itself well to the DTS surround-sound format.

Gill's vocals are spread out across the front main two speakers and are also occasionally supported by the surrounds, although I felt that the way the surrounds offered vocals was generally subtle and didn't cause concern. There's a great number of instruments involved in many of the songs on the album (Gill himself plays mandolin, accoustic and solo guitars) and the instruments are very nicely spread out across the front speakers and into the surrounds. This is especially noticable on the title track, where the guitar and banjo parts are nicely positioned in the surrounds. I must say that, in terms of music, I generally liked the more "bluegrass"-sounding version of the title track that ends off the album where Gill is accompanied by Union Station and singer Allison Krauss.

Use of the surrounds generally stays the same, but remains pleasing as it gives a chance for members of Gill's talented backing band to be highlighted - where subtle details of this kind of music probably might have been lost or overshadowed on the two-channel version. Fidelity is excellent throughout as "High Lonesome Sound" provides a warm, crisp sound that's comfortable to listen to as well as being certainly up to what one would expect from a DTS surround presentation of a modern album. Gill's vocals sounded rich and natural and were allowed to have fine presence among all of the instruments that take their place in the listening space during many of these tracks. Detail was excellent, as the instruments came through clearly and were well-balanced - none of them overshadowed another player in the tunes. Although "High Lonesome Sound" won't go down as my favorite surround-sound music presentation, it is a very fine demonstration of the DTS CD format and its ability to provide a dynamic, crystal-clear 5.1 presentation with a wide and deep soundstage.

Extras: There are no extras on DTS CDs. Hopefully this will come out on a DTS DVD-Audio release someday where additional supplements will be provided.

Final Thoughts: An excellent country album with terrific music, "High Lonesome Sound" is a stellar country album that I enjoyed listening to, especially with the excellent surround-sound presentation that this DTS CD offers. Recommended.
