WWE - Armageddon 2006
Here's the card:
- Inferno Match [Kane vs. MVP] - What better way to kick off the Christmas season than with some chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Or, more specifically, MVP. Both guys turned the heat up a few notches and put their bodies (and backsides) on the line during this "gimmick" match and I felt it was a great way to kick off the PPV.
- Divas In Theodore Long's Office
- WWE Tag Team Championship 4-Way Ladder Match [Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. William Regal & Dave Taylor vs. MNM vs. the Hardys] - There were many things going through my mind as I was watching this match. The first was: although I love Regal, once Long decided to make this a ladder match, he and Taylor became part of a Sesame Street "...one of these things doesn't belong" song. Second: Man, did the audience pop for the Hardys. It's a shame there aren't any other tag teams that get that sort of reaction. This was a great freakin' match with tons of action and some great spots. Holy, holy shit, this was a great match.
- Boogeyman vs. the Miz - I'll let JBL do the talking - "You had an inferno match, you had this incredible ladder match and now you've got an unfettered jackass (the Miz) following all of it." 'nuff said.
- Chavo Guerrero And Vickie Promo
- United States Championship Match [Chris Benoit vs. Chavo Guerrero] - After two "gimmick" matches, we have this match which spotlights how good a wrestler Benoit is and how much Chavo has improved. This was another entertaining match.
- WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match [Gregory Helms vs. Jimmy Wang Yang] - Helms looked pretty good during this match. Wang Yang, on the other hand, I can't say much about. In fact, up until this match i'd never even heard about him. Way to make a first impression, Jimmy!
- Last Ride Match [Undertaker vs. Mr. Kennedy] - Every single SmackDown! PPV i've seen, Mr. Kennedy always seems to get his ass kicked more than necessary. I've commented a few times that he must've done something to the McMahons to warrant that sort of treatment. Nonetheless, both guys put on a good show, complete with a high-flying (or should I say high-falling) stunt that was impressive. Well, at least until the cameramen showed us exactly where 'taker landed. Here's a hint, free of charge, guys - if you want a "Holy Shit" moment, don't show the thick layer of padding that the wrestler lands on! We don't need to see behind the curtain, Toto.
- King Booker And Finlay In the Locker Room
- Naughty Or Nice Lingerie Contest [Kristal vs. Layla vs. Jillian vs. Ashley] - I think they forgot a third option. It should've read "Naughty, Nice or Boring Lingerie Contest". Okay, that was kinda snarky of me, because in all honesty Jillian does cause my temperature to rise. Also, I think Layla is damn sexy and, since I don't watch the divas try to "wrestle" on SmackDown!, this slight distraction doesn't bother me as much as it would if I were watching Raw. Well, that is, until Santa decides to show off his lingerie. Ugh.
- Batista & John Cena vs. King Booker & Finlay - Quite frankly, this match wasn't terrible, but I wasn't too impressed by it. In fact, I thoughtit was only a couple of notches above Boogeyman's match. Then again, i'm not much of a Cena fan. "Smash Mouth-style" or not.
In addition to the PPV, there's ONE extra:
- 1st Inferno Match - Unforgiven 1998 [Undertaker vs. Kane]
Video: Armageddon's picture was colorful and vibrant and presented in the WWE's standard full frame 1.33:1 ratio. Thankfully, they seem to have improved the picture quality. I still noticed some slight compression artifacts here 'n there, but it's nowhere near as rampant as it has been on the past few WWE DVD's i've reviewed.
Audio: The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound was crystal clear and enveloped my living room while I was watching it. Viewers are also given the option of watching the disc in Spanish.
Conclusion: This was, hands down, one of the best SmackDown! PPVs that i've ever reviewed. In fact, based on how much ass the Tag Team Championship match kicked, i'd say this could very well be the best one i've reviewed. I know it's a gimmick and I know that the risk of injury is greater to the wrestlers, but dammit, if my blood and adrenaline was flowing like crazy during this match. In fact, with the exception of "the Miz", this PPV had some great matches all around - and the ones that weren't "great" were "good" enough to make this a Highly Recommended disc.
