South Park: Winter Wonderland

Movie:
South Park is a mature cartoon animated and voiced primarily by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The show, now in its fifth season, airs on Comedy Central. Each episode mainly revolves around four elementary school kids in South Park, Colorado: Kenny, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman. South Park: Winter Wonderland is one of two newly released collections by Warner Brothers and contains these four episodes from the long running series: A Very Crappy Christmas, Are You There God? It's me, Jesus, Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000, and Something You Can Do With Your Finger. As with the other South Park releases by Warner, they are not in broadcast order.

In A Very Crappy Christmas, the kids decide to make their own animated Christmas special to put the citizens of South Park in the spirit of giving as Mr. Hankey now has a family to look after.

In Are You There God? It's me, Jesus, the citizens of South Park are preparing for the millennium celebrations and look to Jesus to provide them with a glimpse of God. The boys also face the mysteries of puberty, as Cartman has his first period.

In Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000, Cartman is sent to a maximum-security juvenile hall after hitting the only black kid in school with a rock. However, he and the boys have to find a way to break him out, as winning the sled race against the girls depends on his participation.

In Something You Can Do With Your Finger, Cartman decides to start a boy band after receiving a message from God. Unfortunately, Stan's dad is hiding a shameful secret about his past that may interfere with the boy's plans to make it big in the music world.

While I'm certainly not the biggest fan of South Park, I do like the show and I try to catch it on TV when I can. However, I really only enjoyed two episodes on the disc: Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000 and Something You Can Do With Your Finger. Sure, the other two included episodes have their moments, but nothing beats the white bronco chase in Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000 and seeing "Fingerbang" perform at the beginning of Something You Can Do With Your Finger.

Picture:
South Park: Winter Wonderland is presented in 1.33:1 full frame, as it was originally presented on TV. The picture looks as good as, if not better than, it does on TV. Colors are vibrant, blacks are accurate, and contrast is solid.

Sound:
South Park: Winter Wonderland is presented in Dolby 2.0 Surround Stereo. Dialogue throughout all the episodes is crisp and clean with no distortion, though the only surrounds are in the music. Optional subtitles are available in English and French.

Extras:
The only "extra" on the disc is one long promotional spot for South Park, The Daily Show, The Man Show, and Battlebots.

Summary:
South Park: Winter Wonderland contains a decent mix of episodes, but nothing that would warrant a purchase unless you're a diehard fan of the series in general or the episodes on the disc in particular. Rent it.
