The Movie:

This video collection release from A & M records is a simple compilation of the videos from Janet Jackson's extremely popular "Rhythm Nation" album, featuring 7 videos (3 of which were directed by "Swordfish" and "Gone in 60 Seconds" director Dominic Sena). The videos include: Miss You Much, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Alright (extended), Come Back to Me, Black Cat, and Love Will Never Do (Without You).

While it's terrific that these videos are now available in a single package for fans of the singer, I remain somewhat less than thrilled with the release, which seems as if the videos were simply thrown together. No 5.1 sound, which the songs would have benefited nicely from and very few extras at all.

The DVD

VIDEO: The videos are presented in a mixture of 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen and full-frame. The videos are generally of decent quality, appearing rather soft, but not hazy or undefined. Some minor shimmering and a couple of slight traces of pixelation are visible, but the colors appeared nicely saturated and without any problems such as smearing.

SOUND: I was quite dissapointed to see that these videos are only presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, when the songs would clearly be livened even further from a Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. That in mind, the audio quality of the 2.0 tracks sounded fine, as they presented the songs clearly and crisply, with a decent amount of bass and easily heard vocals. A PCM 2.0 track is also included, but I didn't feel that the two tracks sounded different from one another.

MENUS:: Menus contain some very basic animation and some beats playing in the background.

EXTRAS: The "special features" section includes "continuous play". Wow. The last chapter of the videos included some interviews with Jackson, but that's it for the features.

Final Thoughts: Fans of Janet will likely be pleased that these videos (and there are some really great videos here) are available on DVD and the price ($19.99 or less) isn't bad. Still, I would have liked at least some basic supplements and more attention paid to the audio.
