Summer of Sam
The Movie: In the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam, terrified New York. Rather than focusing on the Son of Sam himself, Spike Lee focuses on the people affected by this madman and how their lives were changed one fateful summer in '77.
The Picture: The picture was superb. Buena Vista did a great job with this transfer from film. Presented in its original widescreen ratio of 1.85:1, the only thing wrong with the picture is a lack of an Anamorphic transfer. I'm sure I'll be kicking myself for having non-anamorphic discs in my collection when I finally get a widescreen TV.
The Sound: The sound was almost perfect. The music that Spike chose fit in seamlessly with the movie. The only problem was it got too loud at times and was out of proportion with the rest of the film. In the theater, despite the loud music, I was able to make out the rest of the film. At times, the music just took over the DVD and the rest of the sounds were hard to make out. Other than those few times, there were no problems with the sound.
The Extras: Extras?? Guess Buena Vista/Touchstone/Disney has a few things to learn. Nobody's going to pay $30 (MSRP) for a DVD with no extras except a trailer. I'm just going to hope that they decide to come out with a special edition featuring commentaries by Spike Lee and/or John Leguizamo. Also it would be nice to see some behind the scenes footage of Spike Lee in action, but alas, it's all missing and we're just stuck with a trailer and the usual cast/crew bios.
Conclusion: In conclusion, if you enjoyed the movie, you'll enjoy the disc. It has great video and good audio transfers but there are absolutely no extras - which is a definite downside. I'm hoping for a SE because I really did enjoy this movie and I'd be willing to pay extra for the extras.
