Olsen Twins - Holiday in the Sun

List Price: $24.98 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
The Movie:
I'm sure more than a fair share (a fair share of that group who probably won't admit it) of people watched "Full House" in the 1980's. Who knew that the Olsen twins would go on to have their own empire. Their videos (and there seems to be a massive amount of them) sell and rent extremely well and they have their own magazine.
Sitting down to watch one of their movies for the first time, I really would hope that the other pictures are more enjoyable than this one. This particular picture is essentially a music video for the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas (complete with lengthy commerical prior to the show). Shot like a music-video, complete with bold colors, occasional slow motion, freeze-frame and other effects, the film stars the Twins as two sisters whose wealthy father just happens to decide to jet them off to the Atlantis resort - instead of going on their school trip to Hawaii with their friends (uh, where is there a high school that goes on a school trip to Hawaii?).
Anyways, they arrive and find that they've already got a rival for romance, some adventure and there's even a smuggling ring that they have to break up. Unfortunately, the acting is weak, the editing is somewhat irritating and there's some bad laughs that seemed unintentional. Not to mention, many sequences revolve around promotion of the hotel that the show takes place at.
Either way, I'm sure this will sell just as well as the other editions of their films have, but I really didn't think it was anything more than a promotional film with mediocre acting.
The DVD
VIDEO: The show is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame and looks quite passable. Sharpness and detail are generally very good, aside from some of the occasional slow-motion shots and freeze-frame effects, which look a bit cheesy. No pixelation appeared and there's only a few minor instances of edge enhancement. Colors are very bright and very bold, without smearing or other flaws.
SOUND: The show is presented in 2.0 audio, which presents the show's rather annoying pop/rock score (the same songs often play over again) with respectable clarity. Dialogue, on the other hand, seemed clear but unnatural sounding, not particularly well-integrated with the scenes.
MENUS: Static menus, with no animation and film-themed images as backgrounds.
EXTRAS:
Behind The Scenes: A short documentary that offers interviews with the twins, the other actors and the crew as they discuss the production and the story. The twins discuss what it's like to work in the Bahamas and offer various other tales, like working with Dolphins. Hilariously, the director even admits that he was attempting to make the film look like a commerical or music video.
Also: Featurette on the clothing of the film, music video from Play, Olsen Twins video & DVD trailers and cast/filmmaker bios.
Final Thoughts: The other Olsen Twins films may be more entertaining than this one, but I really don't care to find out after watching "Holiday In The Sun", which seemed to be all about promotion and commericalism. Instead of an interesting story, it's essentially an 88 minute music video.
