THE STRAIGHT DOPE:
What to say about Aquaria: The Exotic Aquarium? Of all the films that I've reviewed that don't live up to their promise, this is one DVD that accomplishes everything that it sets out to do. The concept? A fish tank full of tropical fish, a couple of different new age music tracks, and a static camera. That's it. It's the same idea as yule log, except you can watch it year round. Sort of like a screensaver for your TV, Aquaria: The Exotic Aquarium is a funny idea. It seems better suited to restaurants and clubs than home viewing but, again, it does exactly what it claims it will do, so you can't complain. The viewer can choose between a wide shot of the entire tank or a roving close-up that spotlights the fish one at a time. It is pretty relaxing to watch, something that is made even easier by the "looping" feature that enables the video to play forever. In fact, the fish are so calm and beautiful that the whole thing makes you feel sort of drowsy and restful that you just sort of drifffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

VIDEO:
Ahem, I'm back. The picture consists of wide-screen anamorphic video (full-frame is also available). The image is clean and the colors are vibrant. For this type of presentation the picture is quite good.

AUDIO:
There are six audio tracks: DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks for each of the two new age soundtracks, a flowing water track, and a track with the actual sound of the tank's filter. They are all pretty quiet, but that's the idea.

EXTRAS:
"Fishographies" are included for the stars, but the font is so hideous and busy that the thing is really hard to read.

A DVD-Rom portion also includes goodies like screensavers.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Like I said, for its goals, this is one disc that achieves it all. If watching fish swim around in a tank is what you want to do you only have two options: Get Aquaria: The Exotic Aquarium or get a fish tank.
