Hannah Montana - Pop Star Profile

The Movie:
Much like "High School Musical," I felt I needed to watch "Hannah Montana" to try and understand her popularity. However, once again, I am baffled as to why she is a star.

This disk contains 4 episodes:

1. "New Kid In School"- Jake Ryan (the star of the fictional show "Zombie High") is attending the same school as Miley Stewart (AKA Hannah Montana). As the students obsess over him, Miley questions whether or not to reveal herself as Hannah Montana to the public.

2. "More Than A Zombie To Me"- Hannah Montana guest stars on an episode of "Zombie High," and becomes closer to Jake.

3. "Good Golly Miss Dolly"- Dolly Parton (Hannah Montana's aunt) comes to visit and gives boy advice to Miley.

4. "People Who Use People"- Jake and Miley try to make each other jealous by hanging out with members of the opposite sex.

Hannah Montana may be a respectable pop singer, but her show is downright unwholesome. Instead of teaching children important values and morals, Hanna's charactersays and does things that clearly label her as being a bad influence. The mini-Rachael Ray (who slips in-and-out of her Nashville accent) big mouth acts like a spoiled stuck-up sarcastic complainer for a majority of each episode. She always has to get her way or she throws a fit. At a few points, she even resorts to shoving people. What kind of message is this sending to kids?

In addition to the flawed character, the whole premise of the show is self-absorbed to begin with. Watching a cartoony show about day in the life difficulties of Miley Stewart (or Miley Cyrus in real life) trying not to reveal her alter-ego (Hannah Montana) is not relatable to the average child.

The only highlight of the show is Emily Osment who plays the goofy best friend of Miley/Hannah. She is the only one who can act. The worst actor on the show is bar none Mr. Achy Breaky Heart himself- Billy Ray Cyrus. His vomit-worthy Southern metaphors and corny jokes about fruit makes Carrot Top looks brilliant.

The DVD

Video:
The fullscreen (1:33.1) picture made me want to make an appointment for an eye exam. The picture often looked out of focus and blurry. I have to wonder if this show even has production values.

Sound: The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound track was not music to my ears. In fact, my ears were hurting. The tin-can sounding laugh track felt tacked on and did not mix well at all with the dialogue and music. The dialogue sounded fine most of the time, but the music seemed distant.

Extras: 1. Previews for "The Jungle Book" DVD, "High School Musical 2," "High School Musical: The Concert," "Return To Halloweentown," "Bridge To Terabithia," "Meet The Robinsons," "The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody: Sweet Suite Victory," "Underdog," and "Peter Pan: Return To Neverland."

2. Subtitles for the hearing impaired.

3. A 3 1/2 minute concert performance of the song "Nobody's Perfect" by Hannah Montana. The song is forgettable, but she is a better performer than an actress.

4. A 5 1/2 minute "Backstage Disney: The Real Miley Cyrus"- The extra has interviews with the cast and the Cyrus family. They mainly talk about how the cast likes to pull pranks on each other. Yawn.

Final Thoughts:
The television character of "Hannah Montana" is a poor role model to children everywhere. Unless you want your children watching and admiring a spoiled stuck up teen, I would suggest avoiding this program at all costs.

Film and television enthusiast Nick Lyons recently had his first book published titled "Attack of the Sci-Fi Trivia." It is available on Amazon.com.
