Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami

Review:
"Keeping Up With the Kardashians" has apparently become enough of a reality show hit for E! that it was time for a spin-off - "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami". This time around, sisters Khloe and Kourtney head to Miami to look over the opening of Dash, the new location of their boutique chain.
As reality shows go, the series works reasonably well thanks to the oil-and-water personalities of the two sisters, as the outspoken Khloe balances her quieter sister and actually still provides the voice of reason (when called for - when not, she can do some dim things), which comes into play later in the season when Kourtney gets back with her boyfriend Scott, who is - somehow - more evil and creepy than Spencer from "The Hills".
While Khloe tends to provide the voice of reason to others in the family, that voice hilariously gets turned off in "Sex, Drugs and Consequences". While the series certainly feels staged, this either feels particularly staged or if not, is one of the dimmer moments in reality TV history. The episode has Khloe finding cocaine left in the Dash store, and bringing it onto her radio show ("Khloe After Dark", which sounds like a "Red Shoe Diaries" episode title) and discussing it.
Needless to say, management of the radio company is not exactly pleased that she brought the substance into the building and provided some sort of bizarre show-and-tell on the air. When everyone is upset with her for talking about crack and bringing it on the air during her radio show, she actually seems surprised at first.
The second half of the series veers off into following Kourtney's attempts at finding a relationship (from kissing a girl in one episode to having Kourtney "audition" potential boyfriends at the store the next episode) to falling back into a relationship with ex-boyfriend Scott (which takes up a lot of the back half of the season.)
Despite being about the two sisters and opening a new store, there's little about the store itself, aside from a couple of episodes where a B-story is created about some of the co-workers. Given the actions of these two, it's a little surprising that they can run a higher-traffic retail store in Miami; a little about the difficulties of doing so (that's why they're there in the first place, isn't it - or is it?) would have been entertaining.
As goofy, stage-y, empty calorie reality TV goes, "Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami" works okay thanks to the chemistry between the two sisters. The back half of the season isn't as enjoyable, but on the whole, the season passes the time well (and apparently did well enough to merit a second season, which will start this Summer.
Note: some of the music seems to have been replaced.

VIDEO: The show is presented by Lions Gate in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Presentation quality is okay, as the presentation looked somewhat softer than the digital cable presentation (possibly due to the fact that all 8 episodes are shoehorned onto one disc - not sure why the special "Wedding" episode had to have its own disc.) Some minor shimmering and a few traces of pixelation are also spotted at times, as well. The Miami colors are supposed to be hot, but they appear slightly smeary at times on this presentation.
SOUND: The show is presented in Dolby 2.0. Audio quality was fine, with bassy music and clear dialogue.
EXTRAS: 7 deleted scenes (and deleted scenes from the special "Wedding" episode), 3 additional "Khloe After Dark" interviews (including, oddly enough, Melissa Joan Hart!) and "The Wedding" (the special episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" where Khloe gets married.)
Final Thoughts: As goofy, stage-y, empty calorie reality TV goes, "Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami" works okay thanks to the chemistry between the two sisters. The set provides fine audio/video quality, as well as a few minor extras. Rent it.
