Review by Earl Cressey | posted July 15, 2002 | E-mail the Author
Silent Mobius is an anime TV series that picks up where the first two motion pictures (released overseas in 1991 and 1992) left off and ran for twenty-six episodes. Earth Under Attack is the first two-disc volume, of three, released and contains the first nine episodes:

Disc One:
1. Awake
2. Decide
3. Tokyo Underground
4. Brake-In
5. Let's Have a Party

Disc Two:
6. Megadyne
7. Kagome, Kagome
8. Yes, My Master
9. Tokyo Antique

In 2024, a new threat to humanity looms large, that of the otherworldly demons known as the Lucifer Hawk. To combat these creatures, the Tokyo Police forms a new department, the Attacked Mystification P.D. (AMP). The AMP consists of four veteran officers: Lebia, the mechanical genius, Nami, the Shinto priestess, Kiddy, the muscle, and Yuki, who is relentlessly cheerful despite their circumstances. However, these four alone aren't enough, so Captain Rally Cheyenne recruits Katsumi Liqueur. Katsumi, though in possession of a weapon of great power that can slay the demons, resists joining until she discovers that through combating the Lucifer Hawks, she could solve her mother's mysterious disappearance and atone for her father's past mistake. With Katsumi, the team is complete; however, now they have to overcome their clashing personalities and conflicts with the other police officers to defeat the Lucifer Hawks.

Silent Mobius definitely has a Blade Runner sort of feel to it, deftly mixing police drama, science fiction, and a bit of mysticism. Like most TV anime series of twenty-six episodes, these first nine really serve to introduce the audience to the characters and start fleshing them out. While in some series this can get a bit tiresome, Silent Mobius moves at a great pace and features some superb character development. I eagerly await future adventures of the AMP arriving on DVD.

Video:
Silent Mobius is presented in 1.33:1 full frame. The transfer contains little in the way of print defects, though there is some aliasing and some minimal cross coloration. Colors are great throughout, bold and vivid at night, while softer during the daytime scenes.

Audio:
Silent Mobius is presented in Dolby 2.0 Surround in English or Japanese. The tracks have a fair amount of directionality throughout the episodes and sound fantastic, especially in the more action-oriented scenes. The music for the series is also incredible and adds a great deal to the atmosphere. Dialogue is crisp and clean throughout, with no distortion that I detected. Optional subtitles are available in English.

Extras:
Extras, which are contained on disc two, include the textless opening, credits, and trailers for several other Bandai anime releases. The DVD set also includes (while supplies last) an exclusive Silent Mobius mini comic and a mini poster.

Summary:
Silent Mobius is a great police-oriented sci-fi series that is definitely worth checking out if you're into Japanese animation. Bandai has delivered the series with a great audiovisual presentation at a nice price. Recommended.
