YogaWorks for Everybody: Body Slim
Yogaworks Body Slim is an enjoyable and effective 50-minute series starting with ab work and then alternating cardio and slow burn sequences. You'll feel your heart rate increase, your muscles burn and you may even sweat a bit. Not bad for a DVD, right?
I do find it odd that the video starts with ab work--most yoga sessions will begin with sun salutations. I also don't think you can just add "yoga" to the beginning of other exercises to make it a yoga pose--yoga bicycles, yoga crunches, etc. But who's complaining about a little extra ab tightening? Not me.
Despite a slow and somewhat unorthodox start, this is one of the better yoga DVDs I have reviewed to date.
Equipment Needed
Everyone will need a mat. Beginners may want a yoga block (or a big book if you don't have a block).
Effectiveness
I found that each section of this workout really does do what it claims. The cardio series increases your heart rate. The slow burn definitely burns. And even the ab section invokes that desired muscle exhaustion.
Safety
Beginner's can follow the instructor on the right for modifications. Listen to your body and don't push beyond your limits unless you want a pulled muscle.
Cast/Instructor
The workout is led by a Yogaworks instructor and the cast consists of other instructors and students from the studio. The lead instructor is easy to follow and cues moves at the right time.
Music
Standard soothing yogi music.
Set
The set is designed to resemble a Yogaworks studio, complete with little storage cubbies for the students.
Video
The DVD is 1:33:1 full screen and looks fine.
Negatives
Again, I find it odd to start a yoga session with ab work--and non-yoga ab work at that. Where were the boat poses? I also felt like the first sun salutation after the ab work is slow to start but everything picks up speed and is more enjoyable after that.
Conclusion
After hating Yogaworks Fit Abs with such a fiery passion, I was happy to see that this workout was much, much better. I gauge the quality of fitness DVDs on whether or not I will pass them off to my friends. This is one that I have already promised to loan out. Give this one a try.
