GERRY ANDERSON'S UFO SET 1

Synopsis:

The earth is under attack from an alien menace intent on harvesting human organs. S.H.A.D.O (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization) under the command of Commander Ed Straker wages a seemingly never-ending war against a stealthy and mysterious opponent. With the successes of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet under his belt, Anderson entered the live-action set with this wonderful Sci-Fi series. Set in our past but their future (1980) UFO clearly set marks in both the style and execution of his next Sci-Fi live-action series Space 1999.

Audio/Video:

The audio for UFO unlike Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet has not been remixed/remastered for DD5.1 sound. The original Mono platform is presented and, surprisingly enough, the presentation is wonderful. The dialog is all easily understood. The first episode of this 13-episode collection features a commentary by Gerry Anderson. Much like his commentary for Captain Scarlet, it is full of information, but has a very scripted feel to it that makes for a rather dull hour. The video is presented in the series original full frame format. The colors are rich and well saturated. The fleshtones are accurate and the black levels are good. For a 32-year old series it looks great! There are artifacting elements throughout this first set however they are so minimal they are hardly worth mentioning.

Extras:

In addition to the film's commentary track featuring series creator Gerry Anderson, a production stills photo gallery and Anderson biography/filmography are included. Alternate video Outtakes featuring SYD (Satellite early warning system) are included as well.

Overall:

UFO is still one of the best Sci-Fi series produced. This set's luscious transfer is more than enough reason for anyone to pick it up. If you've never seen it it's worth a look-see. For fans of the series, the wait is over. Now where's set 2?… Recommended
