Major League

More often than not when a slew of sequels emerges, they do so to pay homage to the original rather than deliver more great material for the same story line. Major League is just such an original. There is a smorgasbord of stars in this film adding a big incentive to the laughs.
This is the story of a group of rag-tag disenfranchised baseball players who come to create the new Cleveland Indians. They have recently been inherited by Rachel Phelps (played by Margaret Whitton) a manipulative selfish, rich-bitch who is only interested in moving the franchise to Florida. She hires this team of washed up hopeless third rate players in hopes of losing every game and finishing the season in dead last place. Enter catcher Jake Taylor, (played by Tom Berenger) an aging womanizer who failed early in life and wants to make a come back. Jake befriends pitcher Rick "The Wild Thing" Vaughn (played by Charlie Sheen), an angry bad-boy punk with criminal tendencies fresh out of jail and looking for a free ride. Third baseman Roger Dorn (played by Corbin Bernsen) has a real problem with Vaughn after he sleeps with his wife.
Enter Willie Mays Hayes (played by Wesley Snipes) a star hot-shot player obsessed with steeling home. The gorgeous Rene Russo plays Lynn Wells, Jakes love interest who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend. Several other colorful characters round out our team and set up a great set of comical scenarios. This movie still has the ability to make me laugh out loud. Its a lot of fun and has a little something for everyone. Each player has their own agenda and they play off each other very well creating some really classic moments. Charlie Sheens character, Rick Vaughn particularly finds his character as "The Wild Thing" and elicits many laughs while we watch the crowd scream and cheer dressed as Indians.
This movie is designed to make audiences laugh and for me, it succeeds. There is a lot to like about this movie, a great variety of characters, loud cheering ball parks, and quirky relationships.
VIDEO: 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen and looking a bit soft. Colors look good.
AUDIO: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby 2.0, French mono tracks as well as English subtitles. Audio is mostly focused in the center channel.
MENUS: The menu designs are static and look the same as box cover.
BONUS MATERIALS: Sadly lacking.
Final Thought: Major League is another commonly played TV movie so it may not fit on too many DVD shelves, but if you like good light hearted comedy sprinkled with a little romance and the good old-fashioned thrill of victory, then I recommend Major League.
